LIV golf (whether you like it or not)

Overseas games, games on Xmas

We all know that most leagues prioritize money before fans. The question is not "whether fans still watch" we know they do, for now.
But some are disillusioned with the cost of watching sports, or the disregard for tradition, regionally, accessibility etc.
Whatever your bugaboo.

Would you ever vote with your eyes and choose not to watch a sport you love in order to send a message?
What if "not watching" becomes a movement and you'd have an actual impact.

Or would you not care, and let's say, pay 2k/year for the nfl package if it gets there? 5k for a tourney ticket or an nba finals tick for 4k?

No right answer. I didn't make it a vote because it's nuanced.

I don't think it's a matter of sending a message. People will decide whether something is worth the cost. If not enough people are buying a package/tickets, that will demonstrate that its price was too high. Given that prices keep rising, I don't think that message has been sent yet.

This is totally dependent on how passionate a fan you are and how much disposable income you have. Two people might be equally big fans and equally ticked off at the NFL or NCAA, but one of them may pay the prices because they make a ton of money.
 
$1000? Is that in stadium tickets? Giants lower level tickets have a PSL of 5000 and a yearly cost of $1500. Upper level PSL is $1000 and $1000 per year.
NFL season ticket is $350, but in Ct. They are often on tv package on Fox.
Yankees a perfect example. To watch them you need YES or whatever, Prime, Apple TV and maybe Peacock for every game, so it’s a bit much.

To answer that question. If one wanted to watch "every game" (NFL network, Amazon prime, sunday ticket,espn, etc) now costs someone over 1500 dollars. I was just estimating what an average of 350-$500 for Sunday ticket- 1500 dollars to watch it all. These numbers aren't exact though. Let's just call it "pretty expensive for the normal fan"

Good distinction. You're right. I guess the vote would be the equivalent of "this is just too expensive for me care at the level I'm used to".

I'm not sure how to answer this, but....

  1. I had a mess to deal with to watch the Mets in CT the last few years. I had Dish and they did not carry SNY. I couldn't get the MLB package because it was blacked out. I had to get YouTube TV which was 69.00 a month on top of Dish (I was locked into a 2 year deal). The following season, YouTube TV dropped SNY. So I had to cancel that, then get out of my deal with Dish in order to get Hulu.

    The Mets are one of my favorite summer hobbies to watch and I hated having the jump through the hoops to watch their games.

  2. I didn't feel like getting Peacock just to watch a couple UConn games this year. It wasn't that I couldn't afford it. I just didn't FEEL like going through the nonsense for a couple games and I just followed along in the chat or on CBS gametracker and the radio feed.
I think everyone has levels of tolerance for what they're willing to pay and do to watch something.
 
In general I’ve just stopped watching “other teams” more than I used to. This year I barely watched any CBB besides UConn games and the BET/NCAAT.

Same applies to NFL, European soccer, etc. I’ll watch maybe one big match up per week outside of my favorite teams.

That’s more because of time than money. But I’m definitely not paying 1500 bucks to watch every NFL game. That’s not healthy even if you can afford it.

That's insane. We accept that all technology is convenient. That is an insult to baseball fans. I used to watch every mets game, standard channel, no such thing as a blackout, in the 80s and 90s. That would be a dream come true now. (And I'm a rays fan)

It's gotten totally ridiculous. You can't even watch Bulls games in Chicago anymore. NBC Sports Chicago no longer exists. The Chicago Sports Network now broadcasts every game but they never reached an agreement with Comcast or the streaming services. I could get an antenna to watch but screw them, didn't watch a single game this year at home.

I already have. I quit watching SEC, B10, B12 and especially the ACC in football and basketball unless they are are playing UConn, a team in the Big East or another G6 team.

Get MLB TV + a VPN like Nord and you're all good.

But you're right, it's ridiculous.

Especially for a sport like MLB that should be doing everything possible to make it as easy as possible to watch games for the consumer. They are NOT the NFL and even die-hards like me are getting sick of the lengths you have to go to watch a single freakin game.

I feel like I'm getting there. My non uconn college football viewing has boiled down to the army navy game and ohiostate-michigan. When i see a big ten symbol on the field at an Oregon usc game it just looks like this B1$

Nobody should really want to watch every NFL game unless that's their business. Most of them are on opposite other games. I get all the Pats games for free. It's fine.

NBA I get the Celtics games. No issues. I get all the UConn games and had Peacock even before they moved some games there.

Baseball and Hockey, I don't have NESN. I'd pay $10 a month for it but not $30. Sometimes it's the principle of the thing. Until they drop the price or negotiate a reasonable carriage fee with Hulu or YTTV it's a no. Most Sox fans bitch when they are on Apple, but those are the games I can watch. Can also just go to a bar.
 
I don’t watch sports much anymore. 1) taking a stand with my money 2) too much aggravation/anxiety when my team stinks, 3) being a fan makes you hate people. As a Steelers fan I really hated Brady and Gronk, but in reality they are real cool guys and would love them if on my team. I don’t need that in my life anymore.

I enjoy engaging in message dialogue much better.

These PSL prices are if purchased directly from the Giants. These PSLs cost much less on the secondary market. Unlikely to recoup the initial PSL cost when you sell.

Thankfully, the Mets problem was "solved" this year, by SNY basically giving up, and selling rights to MLB.TV. You can now stream them in-market, and pay for standalone SNY access. It's glorious.

I did this, for this year, to avoid having to switch back and forth to DTV Stream (which consequently has stopped being useful with their new pricing structure) and YTTV.

At some point, I'll price out YTTV for a year + SNY against flipping on and off the various streaming services, now that FOX is going streaming). Advantage is that i can probably save money, but only if I'm VERY diligent about shutting things off when not needed.
 
I have actively stopped watching/going to the Yankees since like 2021 mainly because they ruined the organization and the team is managed by a 4 year old with an iPad. Pirates have my eyes now, but I love baseball and can’t give it up even tho I hate Manfred.

I stopped watching NASCAR for maybe 10+ years but recently (3-5 years) have gotten back into it because a few of my friends are buddies with Ryan Preece from Berlin. So that has been the ultimate underdog story as of late. Love it tho.
 
Love football but my team is Detroit and I get to see them 1-2 times a year on the road. Usually @ Phil or @ Giants/Jets. No way I'm paying for a Sunday ticket - that is for football junkies who need to see multiple games, the scores, etc. Not me - I can follow plenty on free websites and the occasional live network TV game.

I spend for UConn only - away games where I can watch or plan travel (e.g., @Texas is fun bc I like Austin and can work there). @Seton Hall is a short ride from home and @MSG is just a train into the city. Once we see the full schedule and tickets are available I plan my Fall and Winter travel.

I love baseball and will not give it up. I used to like baseball and football equally but I can't ignore how I feel. Baseball is just universally unpopular enough where I don't have to deal with anything other than the pure sport. With mass popularity comes the casuals. I dont need the casuals. I liked Journey before they were cool again.

In theory, this is how it should work. But unfortunately it's become way too easy for ticket brokers to inflate the perceived value of these tickets, which then has a trickle down effect on the initial pricing.

The other thing I worry about when it comes to the future of consumer sports - which is directly related to my first point, and your second one - is growing income inequality. 17,000 fans willing to pay $40 a ticket can take your business a lot further than 24,000 fans willing to pay $20. The bidding war for content being fought by streaming services is just a reflection of the same principle playing out on a larger scale.

Eventually, I have to believe a reckoning is coming where the value of some of these franchises begins to erode. It might not be for another generation, but sooner or later some of them are going to run out of customers.

Does this work for Yankees on MlB in Connecticut? I tried this a couple years ago and it didn’t work. Anyone know which VPN definitely works with MLB I am all ears.
 
This gets into the discussion of ESPN selling a streaming version of the channel for $30/month. I can't see myself signing up for that.

I watch the NFL, college football and college basketball, European club soccer, and summer soccer tournaments.

Every game my favorite soccer team plays is on Paramount+ which is $14/month without ads. ESPN lost the rights to the World Cup, Copa America, and Euros.

I'm a Jets fan and I only watch their games that are on TV. If I miss the Amazon Prime game, I'll live. So CBS, FOX, NBC, and the odd ESPN game.

All of UConn's home football games are on CBS Sports Network.

Most of UConn's basketball games are on FOX or FS1 with some on Turner or Peacock.

So why get ESPN?

For people like me who watch football, college basketball, and soccer, most are not going to sign up for this $30/month plan.

I use it for the Redsox in MA, so I can't see why I wouldn't. I use NordVPN.

It didn't work for me out of the box, but after talking with their support we found a way around and have not had an issue since.

This is the way. Been doing IPTV for seven years and it is the best service out there. I mentioned it before and was shut down with replies stating that it is illegal. Have not missed a UConn men's or women's game since. Peacock, it's there, ESPN+, it's there, you name it it's there. I was searching for a Liverpool match one day, went everywhere, found it, the wife comes in and says what are you watching, I tell her, what language, Arabic. It's all there and cheap.
