Been that way for years - Gold plated sterling silver. Part of the problem is that every year the damn things get bigger - pretty soon they will be the size of dinner plates. At the current price of gold and the current size of the medal, the cost of the metal would be $10,000 -$20,000 each. I think the athletes probably prefer the cash prize.
