...that is will they stand until the first basket of each quarter or just beginning of the game and second half?

I think that only apply to halves... Ct Sun do it at the start of the game and after the half.

between quarters isn't long enough for a "stretch"

With the new rules, I believe it's time to embrace a new strategy.

We should stand at the start of every quarter, every TV timeout and every opposing coaches desperation time out.

Think of the condition we'll be in by the time the Final Four rolls around. Opposition fan bases will need substitutes.

I would love to know the origin of the standing as well.

Rutgers fans (many of whom started following the team no later than the mid-80's) mostly tended to agree with the poster who said "its stupid" - but then realized that it "does" energize the team and scrambled to find alternatives. It never caught on, although the cheerleaders and band did it for years, but the RU "thing" was a particular repetitive "RU" chant at the beginning of both halves.

Here in Arizona we stand until the opposing team scores, which is apparently a Coach Butts thing. I've also seen that done elsewhere. And yes, we (usually) do it, without complaint.

But I don't know where it started.

And it could be worse - the Zona Zoo stands for entire football games - our section at the Fiesta Bowl must have included some former inmates, because we stood the entire Fiesta Bowl (sat during time outs, I admit).

I know it's tradition and all that, but I think the standing is stupid.
Does anyone know how that got started?

Just out of curiosity, why do you feel the tradition of standing at the start of both halves is stupid?

I believe it to be a worthwhile tradition at home games. On the other had I have to say it is inconsiderate when blocks of UConn fans do it at away games in someone else's stadium with their fans behind them. I guess its fine at Tournament time when most teams have their own sections.

I think the fans should have to stand until we score ONE HUNDRED points! If you agree please stand up and wait for our first home game.

I was at an ASU game and people stood until the first team scored, which seemed kinda dumb to me. I mean, it's all about cheering on the offense at that point, isn't it?

I agree... UConn Womens games are dead enough, the least we can do is "stand"

Well for one thing it blocks the view of the game for many people, especially those with disabilities.

Many fans sit after our first point is from the foul line. Does this count? I always thought tradition was the first 2 or 3 pt basket and NOT from fouling...?

True, but with occasional exceptions, it's usually only a matter of seconds each half, and if it does block them, it's only a couple of baskets. Plus, in those rare times when the game is actually in question in the waning moments (think Tenn in 2000), can you ask the entire crowd to not stand then?

How about after every opponent's pass thrown out of bounds? :p

I don't see how quarters have any bearing on it. People stand at the beginning of the game, and the start of the second half, it doesn't matter how many times each half is divided no need to stand. Now if it went to 3 equal periods that would be different.

That school up north also stands until the opponent scores, I think. First basket would make no sense, at least to me.
