Personally, I think there will be a second split in D-1 football, but the line will be between the MW and C-USA.
1-A: Power 5, American, MW
1-AA: C-USA, MAC, Sun Belt, Ivy, Big Sky, CAA, Missouri Valley, Southland, Big South
1-AAA: MEAC, Northeast, OVC, Patriot, Pioneer, SWAC, SoCon

1-A will have an 8-team playoff while 1-AA and 1-AAA will have a 16-team playoff.

Question: Why would something like that happen before the P5 had finished picking the last useful remnants of the AAC and MWC and simply discarded the rest?

Because they would still need a conference (or two) to beat on. The ACC is not going to enjoy having 8 or 9 of its 14 teams with losing records.

As long as the G5 grant concessions to the P5, I don't think we will see a split. If the P5 wants concessions that the G5 will not grant, then I think we will see a split.

The ACC struggles with G5 schools
