Most of us already knew Gamecocks fans were different. I'm not sure this explains "why".

South Carolina was known in the 19th Century to be "too small to be a republic and too large to be an insane asylum". Nearly two hundred years later, it's still largely true.

I was stationed in Charleston, lived off base in Summerville, while in Navy in the 70s. It was a cool place (except a lot of the younger locals didn't really appreciate members of the military) but I didn't realize how cool it really was until after I left the Navy and settled in the DC suburbs. ☹
