Amongst four other names (Pollard, Walter, Bischel & Brown)

-> Jim Penders, Connecticut

It’s hard to tell at this point if Penders would have a desire to leave UConn given the program has a newer ballpark and the school cares about baseball, but Virginia would be foolish not to give him a strong look. Penders, a Connecticut native, has built a consistent postseason contender while with the Huskies. In his 22 seasons with the program, Penders has guided the Huskies to 10 NCAA tournament appearance along with three NCAA Super Regional appearances — the last Supers trip coming just last season. Penders also is very appetizing from a contractual standpoint. He makes around $380,000 annually with the Huskies and has two years left on a five-year deal signed back in 2022. Penders is a proven big-time winner, and he has done it at a program that recruits some of the same areas as the Cavaliers. <-

D1Baseball/Rogers has always respected Penders so I guess it’s a compliment his name continues to come up for high end openings.

Interesting timing. The budgeting and scholarship/NIL set for now and the future at UVA vs. MSU is likely a part of what led O’Connor to make his move. Whatever happens, leverage could be good in bringing more AD resources toward UConn Baseball. No question that has been earned. Other programs including MSU will be operating with up to 34 scholarships plus NIL - over time that will make them kings of the sport. No question UVA is a good fit for JP. Also no question he wants to keep winning and then some in Storrs.

-> Virginia • Virginia has a head coaching search to undergo for the first time since the summer of 2003. That summer, the Cavaliers hired then-Notre Dame assistant Brian O’Connor to be the next head coach. Now, the Cavaliers hope to replace the legendary coach with another fantastic skipper. Wake Forest head coach Tom Walter was initially one of the frontrunners for the job, but we are told by multiple sources that Walter will stay put at Wake, and that interest between the two parties has tapered off over the last few days. The frontrunner for this job is without a doubt Duke head coach Chris Pollard. Pollard has done an incredible job of turning the Blue Devils into a consistent contender in the ACC, and has some ties to the Charlottesville area. O’Connor was making just over $1.6 million with the Cavaliers. I’m not saying the Cavaliers will have to go that far to lure Pollard to C’Ville, but he’s someone who is more than content staying in Durham if Carla Williams and the Cavaliers decide to low-ball him to some degree. Another name that continues to be hot from my sources on the ground in Charlottesville is Connecticut skipper Jim Penders. Penders is an outstanding coach, and the Cavaliers would not have to break the bank to lure him from Storrs, Conn. Frankly, if the Cavaliers hire Pollard or Penders, I would consider the hire to be a home run. Both are very well-respected and excellent coaches. <-

Duke has plans in place to spend millions on upgrading their stadium over the next few years. Pollard is in a groove there and it seems to be a lateral move outside of UVA baseball having a bigger fanbase. Duke will pay Pollard accordingly if he has an offer, especially if they make the CWS.

One bullet dodged…

.-.
So next question... is Duke a risk?
So glad I was wrong.
Duke is on the rise as a gig.
They have so much $. Does it go to baseball? I don’t know.
Edit: Current LSU and former Duke assistant Josh Jordan is frontrunner.

I'm inclined to think Coach Penders is likely to stay at UConn, but we'll see what happens.

This is hardly the first time there is talk about him leaving UConn to possibly coach baseball at another school. I seem to recall that several years ago there was talk about Michigan being interested in him coaching their baseball team.

Names seen mentioned are Jordan, Lemonis, Penders, and Ty Blankmeyer (SJU player, Vandy asst., former Duke asst.)
