Men Why Jim Penders' family history has made his UConn experience so personal: 'It’s always been home' (Mike Anthony)

Knowing one branch of the Penders family personally I can say nothing but a class act. This from parents down to the children and on to the grand kids. It is truly a family with a very educated and caring base passed on to the next generation.

I seem to recall there were a lot of UConn fans and donors who were upset in 1986 when Tom Penders didn't get the vacant head basketball coaching job. Funny how things work out sometimes :p

Yes it does. I recall back in 1986 I favored Tom Penders for the job when it was open. However, it seems Jim Calhoun worked out okay.

I seem to recall he wasn't even a finalist

The former Fairfield coach and Nick Macarchek I believe were the others

There was a good amount of talk ~1984 about Tom Penders as the best candidate to replace Perno (who for whatever reasons we kept as head coach) but I don't think it was any more than that.
