Why Is Breanna So Hard To Guard?

She has the size of a post and plays on the perimeter. If you put a smaller person on her she can shoot over them and if you go with size she is quicker and goes around them. If memory serves me I do recall her having an incredible wingspan for her height too. That and she plays hard, making her tough to guard.

They should add that she can shoot well from the perimeter and players who might give her a little trouble size-wise generally can’t guard her out there, she is too quick, fluid and agile.

She is also playing with some great passers this year especially Vandersloot, and Sue Bird before that.

She's like a Kevin Durant with a significantly better attitude and high basketball IQ. Throw a big on her and she'll beat them on the perimeter. Put a smaller player on her and she'll post up and bully them in the paint. Very few players close to her size have the ball handling and fluidity to play on the perimeter like she does. Wilson might get MVP this year (and if she wins it, it'll be well deserved) but Stewart IMO is (and has been) the clear best player in the world for a few years. No one has the all around game and skill set she does.

One of the biggest reasons she's so hard to guard is that she never stops moving, and she'll do whatever it takes to win. Few players in the game play as hard, play with such constancy, at both ends of the court. And that's even with all the minutes she's plays. She works as hard in the 4th period as the first, and often seems to get better as the game goes on. She missed a bunch of shots early last night against Vegas. But she never looked disturbed by it, and put on a show later. Geez, what a gamer she is, which we certainly saw for 4 championship years. In women's basketball there is Breanna, and then everyone else.

I remember when Stewie was in HS. I received a call from a friend who's daughters played AAU ball in NYC with some of the all time greats. He said he had just seen the great women's basketball player he had ever seen and that she wanted to play for UConn. I asked her name and he said Breanna Stewart. I said I had never heard of her. He said well shes 6'3 and can touch the rim, she shoots like Diana and dribbles like Sue Bird. He continued to say she can run like a gazelle and she could play in the WNBA right now. The rest is history.

Quite simply, she is much better than everyone else!
Dang, you said what I was going to say. But, I will go one further, you can't defend against perfection. Stewie is the best player in the WNBA She is Women's BB personified. Her mind and body was built for BB and does she ever show it. A long career and long coaching career when you're done playing. You are the best that ever was. GO STEWIE!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!

Little things, way back when, moulded Stewie into the “nightmare to guard” that she’s become. When she was just starting to pick up the game, as a tall, skinny kid in Syracuse, NY, her father encouraged her to dribble a basketball everywhere she went, and she did. So, by the time Stewie got to HS, she had already developed a proficient handle, far beyond anything that we’ve ever seen from a 6’4” WBB player.

I still remember the UConn Sweet 16 game against Texas in 2015. At one point in a one-sided game TX tried a man-to-man press. Geno just had Stewie take the ball and dribble up the court against a TX Big who couldn’t possibly cover her out on the floor. The Huskies went on to win by 50+.

So, she plays good defense, blocks shots, gets steals, sets smart pics, rebounds, boxes out, has every shot in the book including a hook with both hands, hustles, runs the floor, and tries to make every pass. She was playing point guard bring the ball up two games back every other play. Plus she is one of the smartest players in the league. What else do you need?

I know it’s a little off topic, but is anybody else kinda shocked Rebecca Lobo’s wingspan is only 6’5? Her arms look so much longer than that.
Shocked? No. Most people’s wingspan is approximately the same as their height. Da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man” sketch illustrates what were considered ideal proportions.

She is a very fluid player - to the point where she makes it look effortless. Sometimes you think she is too passive or having an off-night and you look at the box score and she has a 20/10 night.

She also knows when to pick her spots. She gets everyone involved, but when its crunch time or the team needs a basket, she'll take over. Very Larry Bird-like in that regard. I think it was a recent Liberty-Suns game. The Suns were basically outplaying NY most of the game and Stewie was having an off-shooting night...Until about 3 or 4 minutes left when she took over. NY went from down 10 or so to force OT, where NY won.
