Why Hurley expects Tarris Reed Jr. to elevate his game

I'll always think JC and UConn got really lucky when he sat Emeka for that first half against Duke. It took UConn making every single big play and Duke not executing at all in those last 3 minutes for UConn to pull it out. I think we win that game fairly comfortably if he didn't sit Okafor.

It all worked out so we'll never know but I never liked JC's sitting a guy with 2 fouls in the first half rule and I really hated how he wouldn't foul up 3 at the end of games. He's my favorite coach ever but those two things drove me a bit nuts.
My mind abandoned me it was Duke where he sat out not GT. He only ended with 3 PF’s after the 2 in the first half but he musta been careful. We all worried was it the right move.

It also helped that they were in a "break glass in case of emergency" scenario with their big men thanks to their own fouls

Interesting point. I generally agree, however when JC sat Emeka against Duke, it really allowed Emeka to play with ferociousness late in the game. Otherwise, I don't remember any games that it really seemed to help too much.

I really can't stand when coaches let a game a game get out of hand doing it though. I feel like I've watched a lot of games that could have turned out differenlyt if the best player wasn't glued to the bench with 2-3 fouls as his team went down 10-20 points.
It's maddening watching it happen. If you play a guy with 2 fouls the best case is he avoids another foul and gets his usual 25-30 minutes, and worst case is he picks up a 3rd and has to sit for the 1st half and finishes with 20-25 minutes. If you sit him with 2 fouls now the best case is you getting those same 20-25 minutes

Putting this here as well as the Team IMPACT thread since it's mostly about Reed.

"I think as we get closer to the season," Hurley said on Wednesday, "there's an intensity level, a nastiness, a mean streak that you have to have as a big guy, because you've got to be a great screener, you've got to protect your team's rim, and you've got to dominate the backboards. In order to do that, you've got to have an edge."

Does Reed have that edge in him?

"He does have it in him," Hurley said. "I think he's got an alter-ego. The most important thing is that he's got a lot of talent and a lot of confidence. And he's improving a lot."
