Why Hurley expects Tarris Reed Jr. to elevate his game

I'll always think JC and UConn got really lucky when he sat Emeka for that first half against Duke. It took UConn making every single big play and Duke not executing at all in those last 3 minutes for UConn to pull it out. I think we win that game fairly comfortably if he didn't sit Okafor.

It all worked out so we'll never know but I never liked JC's sitting a guy with 2 fouls in the first half rule and I really hated how he wouldn't foul up 3 at the end of games. He's my favorite coach ever but those two things drove me a bit nuts.
My mind abandoned me it was Duke where he sat out not GT. He only ended with 3 PF’s after the 2 in the first half but he musta been careful. We all worried was it the right move.

It also helped that they were in a "break glass in case of emergency" scenario with their big men thanks to their own fouls

Interesting point. I generally agree, however when JC sat Emeka against Duke, it really allowed Emeka to play with ferociousness late in the game. Otherwise, I don't remember any games that it really seemed to help too much.

I really can't stand when coaches let a game a game get out of hand doing it though. I feel like I've watched a lot of games that could have turned out differenlyt if the best player wasn't glued to the bench with 2-3 fouls as his team went down 10-20 points.
It's maddening watching it happen. If you play a guy with 2 fouls the best case is he avoids another foul and gets his usual 25-30 minutes, and worst case is he picks up a 3rd and has to sit for the 1st half and finishes with 20-25 minutes. If you sit him with 2 fouls now the best case is you getting those same 20-25 minutes

Putting this here as well as the Team IMPACT thread since it's mostly about Reed.

"I think as we get closer to the season," Hurley said on Wednesday, "there's an intensity level, a nastiness, a mean streak that you have to have as a big guy, because you've got to be a great screener, you've got to protect your team's rim, and you've got to dominate the backboards. In order to do that, you've got to have an edge."

Does Reed have that edge in him?

"He does have it in him," Hurley said. "I think he's got an alter-ego. The most important thing is that he's got a lot of talent and a lot of confidence. And he's improving a lot."

Why Tarris Reed Jr. is Team IMPACT signee's favorite UConn men's basketball player: 'He's a great guy'

And sitting Caron let Maryland back in the game.

Look at Stew in that pic, he looks big, and he wasn’t skinny before.
Sent a still shot of him earlier in the week - kid is stout. Hopefully he puts it to use this year (not being a jump shooter).

He is definitely bigger so it really is going to be interesting to see if the added bulk impacts his quickness. When he does play the three he should be a matchup nightmare to guard on the blocks.

I wonder what happens during those games where Taris picks up two quick fouls. Depending on the match up and what type of center the other team has, we may see more AK and Stewart as our two bigs and surround them with a bigger lineup, maybe Ross at the three and Mullins at the two with Demary at PG.

I could see that group with their length apply an all out pick your man up full court defensive. Really play at a super quick pace. That takes time off the shot clock gets the opponent out of rhythm and maybe leads to some rushed three point attempts like teams did to us last year.

This year we turn the tables on a team like St Johns, Demary, Mullins, Stewart and Ross are all capable of getting the rebound preferably a long rebound off a rushed three point attempt and pushing up court without having to stop to look to outlet.

I think Danny said we were very efficient when we ran last year but because of our defense we did not get a chance to run that that much. This year it may end up being a calling card.

Stewart and Alex both bulked up for a reason.

Well if you look at the landscape of teams that were top ten last year, outside of Duke there was one common theme, old and strong. Duke had a generational freshmen and 3 top 10 picks, all 5 starters drafted. Florida had an old, strong backcourt. Auburn was really old, Houston was lead by two old men.

You just can’t compete these days if you're not big and strong.

Being asked to and schemed up to be the guy this year will help Tarris lock in more naturally.

Its just easier to perform consistently when you know you're being depended on to be the guy rather than coming off the bench no matter what you do.

The only thing that can stop Tarris from being an AA class player is foul trouble and Tarris's sometimes murky mood.
The talent is there and it was a great portal pick-up.
Stew looks like a man this season vs the past two.

I think the only thing that can stop Tarris IS Tarris.

Tough game to watch us getting down 8-10 several times in the second.

But all 3 of their bigs wound up fouling out so Emeka was blue skies and never picked up #4.

Our perimeter D was amazing - they were 6 for 22 from 3 with Duhon and Redick while we went 6-11 with Gordon, Anderson mainly. Taliek was a complete minus though so that made it interesting.
