Pardon me if this has been asked and answered but Stanford is not on the Women's schedule this season. Stanford was one of the teams that UCONN continued to play after the Geno-Pat war. What happened?

I beleive Tara wanted to take a year off. The series, as far as I know, is schedule to resume next year.

Yeah - Stanford decided to put the series on hold. Both east and west coast teams tend to plan only one cross country trip a year and stack two or three games into that trip. Not surprising that either Stanford or Uconn might want to vary the program from time to time by scheduling a different 'marquee' game. With some resurgent teams in the Pac, Uconn has better alternatives than in previous years.

In the last 2+ seasons there have been 4 major programs that decided not to continue to scheduled a regular season game with UCONN.
ND discontinued the series with UCONN in the 2013-14 Season
Stanford & Duke discontinued the series for this season.
MD discontinued the series last season.
If history repeats itself then we will meet up with Duke and Stanford this year in the NCAA tournament as we did with MD and ND in the years they decided to cancel the series.

Why did Tara want out?

1. She is tired of losing.
2. She did not want the Samuelson sisters play against each other (or the the sisters did not want to play against each other).
3. She wanted to go out with a victory against UCONN.

Anyone knows why?

Why doesn't Geno schedule Attila the Hun, or Benito Mussolini.... I mean why is the blame being placed on Geno.... seems unacceptable to blame Geno for who is not scheduled...

Geno has never demonstrated a fear of playing top competition. Look at our OOC schedule for this year. I think UcMiami is on the right track. Sometimes teams just want to vary their schedule.

Besides losing to UCONN is not necessarily a bad thing for a program. DePaul sent a message cross-country a few nights ago, and ND used what they learned in their December loss to us to keep the National Championship game respectable.

In my mind scheduling difficult opponents makes the sport that much more interesting to follow. In footbal Ohio State loses to Michigan State and they're out of the discussion for the NC. Two years ago our men were embarrassed in the last week of the regular season and then rallied to win it all.

South Carolina got whomped by us in February but still had a puncher's chance to win it all a month later. We all "knew" that we would win it all at the Final Four, but I also "knew" that we would trounce Stanford four months earlier.

Programs that aspire to greatness want to play the best (Baylor excluded) and basketball allows a team to do that without suffering the death penalty if you lose mid-season.

Afterall we lost three times to our "dreaded" rival in 2013, but our girls still had their pictures taken cutting down the final net.

Dawn Staley is going to take her chances playing us because it can only help her team and program to improve. She knows that that's the way it works.

Staley took her chances because it was a single home-and-home. Easy to play over two seasons and doesn't hurt the program even to lose twice...if indeed that happens.

I doubt Stanford went on hiatus out of fear. There is an appetite for the series, and it'll be be back. It doesn't hurt us not to be playing it unless we end up in a showdown sometime in the tourney. If we do enter the tourney as a #1 seed, might Stanford or Tennessee be #2 in the same bracket? That's a a potential Armageddon scenario.

For that matter, A&M, after absorbing two 30-point humiliations at the hands of UConn in 2011 and 1012, didn't continue their home-and-home with UConn but got one more crack at the Huskies in the 2014 regionals. Stanford, of course, is a very different program altogether.

This off topic but Ohio St. still has chance to make the playoffs. They will need Florida to beat Alabama and/or UNC to beat Clemson to get in.

I know Geno likes to schedule other teams every once in a while, I imagine Tara does too. I like that Nebraska, FSU, Ohio State and DePaul are on the schedule this year. ND is on it only because this is part of the Jimmy V Classic but the teams are slated to resume playing in short order.

Anyway, the coaches are probably just trying to play new teams every now and then - as favors to friends or home games for players or just for something new.

Dunno, but Mussolini was playing four quarters a long time ago.

Geno has stated that he does not call his friends to schedule games. He waits for them to call him. So all the new teams UConn has played this year were the result of coaches like Jim Foster calling Geno. Give credit to Brenda Friese for calling Geno to schedule a home and home.

There are many up and coming programs that are not afraid to do a home and home with UConn. There is no shortage of coaches that want to play UConn before league play begins. Because the RPI of the AAC conference is so weak, Geno knows that he must schedule as many top 15 schools as he can.

Some teams schedule a consisting mostly of cupcakes and Twinkies (Baylor - except for two games in the Bahamas, the rest are played in Waco) for their pre-conference schedule. This also "guarantees" a winning record entering league play. UConn can't afford to do that. They get enough "sugar" in their diet during the regular season. Geno (like Kevin McGuff - Ohio State / Jim Jabir - Dayton, Tara Van Der Veer - Stanford or Doug Bruno - DePaul), is not afraid to play anyone, anywhere, at anytime.

This does not leave a lot of room for the lower or unranked wannabes. I'm sure UConn's basketball office receives calls throughout the year from programs wanting to explore the possibility of scheduling them "next" year, and beyond.

I'm assuming that everyone knows that each school makes up its own preseason schedule. No one makes it u, or schedules it for them. They can schedule whoever they want to play (Division 1,2,3 or NAIA programs), that's willing (if their schedule and logistics permit) to play them. I remember reading a post this summer that UConn wanted to play Syracuse in NY, as sort of a "homecoming" for Breanna Stewart, and they refused. UConn had to settle for Colgate (40 miles away in Hamilton, NY) instead.

It's understandable. Some coaches don't want to deal with the probability of having to endure a possible 30-40 point loss. It's counter-productive to the confidence and momentum they try to build up in their team leading up to the beginning of league play, especially if that loss occurs on their home floor. Some coaches see playing UConn as a learning experience, some don't.

Not sure Brenda is in that "friend" category. He just meant (and said) he does not want to put his special 'buds' on the spot and make them feel pressured to play him.

Did I not hear, at one of the games, a announcer remark that Stamford did not reschedule any games to punish UConn for recruiting Samuelson ?

Yeah I hear Stamford is pissed at UConn, despite having a branch campus in that city. And by branch campus I mean a parking garage and a glorified cafe across the street from a Target.
