Why are fans saying you can't fire Edsall now?

You send the message that you won't tolerate this crap anymore. Have Spanos take over coaching duties and then fire the whole staff at the end of the season. Edsall is a loser and he's clearly quit on the team just waiting on his paycheck and the players have quit on him. There's no benefit of having this loser anywhere near the program any longer and a whole bunch of negatives letting him do his dead man walking blame game routine until the end of the season. Fire his arse now and let the media and fans know none of this is acceptable and they are going to do everything to invest in and change this program.
