Toby Fournier: 17.7 points, 54.3% FG, 7.9 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, team is 12-0 and in 1st place

Hannah Hidalgo: 25.3 ppg, 48.3% FG, 5.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 5.6 steals, team is 7-5 and in 8th place

Khamil Pierre: 16.3 points, 53.3% FG, 11.9 rebounds, team is 9-3 and in 3rd place

Kymora Johnson: 18.8 points, 43.4% FG, 4.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 2.3 steals, team is 8-4 and in 6th place
 
This one right now is a toss up for me between Fournier and Hidalgo. I'd probably lean Hidalgo here even though Fournier would be a solid choice as well. The numbers she's putting up are just remarkable.
 
Hidalgo feels reminiscent of A’ja Wilson’s 2024 MVP season where the Aces weren’t a top team but she was just head and shoulders above as the most dominant player.

That said, the Aces were 4th of 12 teams, and ND is in 8th of 18. I’d still give it to Hidalgo but think ND needs to come close to winning out aside from the Louisville game.
 
No dog in the fight, my vote goes to Fournier.

Would her numbers be as remarkable if she hadn't alienated half of her former teammates (allegedly) 🙄🙄 (No shade intended)
 
It's a two-woman race between Hidalgo and Fournier. Fournier is a distant 2nd right now given Hidalgo's statistical dominance and ND's ability to tread water at the moment.

Not even sure why Pierre and Johnson were added, as they have about as much a shot of winning the award as I do.

What I do think will happen is that Toby's much more likely to take home DPOY despite Hannah's dominance defensively. ND's record is too poor for Hannah to retain both awards.

As the season starts to wind down I'd vote for Fournier over Hidalgo. Just can't get myself to vote for someone on a team in 9th place over a standout on the undefeated team.

Agreed.

I’m not purely a “ best player/best team” type but that does enter my thinking ESPECIALLY where I believe (as here) that the higher stats player may have been A cause of her team’s mediocre performance . (Call it the ball hog exception)

From my limited experience of watching ND this year I don’t think she’s a ball hog/playing to the detriment of her team, but ND only going 9-6 in conference play should take her out of any POY conversations even if her stats are brilliant. Gotta finish at least top 3-4 to be a true contender for CPOY, especially when the #1 team has a go to star player.

Her being a primary reason why several players transferred out though could be a reason why they’re so much worse this season.

I don’t disagree personally, but has it actually been confirmed? To my knowledge, none of the players who left ND and no one connected to the program has confirmed Hidalgo caused the exodus. The only real evidence I’ve seen was a heated interaction between Hidalgo and Miles over the summer and a TikTok Kate Koval posted with a swift but pointed jab at ND.

No confirmation, just a lot of speculation AFAIK. Usually collegiate teammate drama is kept on the down low and not brought to public light.

I'm sticking with Hannah for ACC POY. Louisville won't finish 17-1 and Duke might not, either. Hannah's still the best player in the conference.
 
Duke lost today but Fournier still had 18 and 7. If Duke still wins the regular season outright I think she wins POY even though Hidalgo’s the better player.

I still feel Hidalgo’s more likely to make 2nd or 3rd team All-American than Toby, but think AAs are slightly favored towards individual excellence while conference POY is slightly tilted towards standing out on a top team. Usually it’s the same general group of players regardless.

There is historical precedence in the ACC of awarding the best player (especially when there's a sizable gap in terms of perception) in the conference over the best player on the best team. Duke and Notre Dame fans know this VERY WELL.

If Notre Dame wins out, the award is Hannah's again. Like it or not, this loss does hurt Fournier's chances.
 
It's a nice discussion specifically designed to irritate our resident Blue Devil fanatic but the simple facts are these:
In marquee ranked games, Toby struggled. She dominated against the weak sisters but in the Duke 7 losses, for the most part she disappeared. I ran her game scores and frankly, it is not good. Again, she's a great player and could be a 2nd or 3rd team All-American at some point but she's should not be the ACC POY this year. Her yearly game score average for all 27 games is 19.3 but her 7 losses were 13.3. While she averaged 17.8 pts per game on the season (8.1 Reb, 1.1 Assists, 2.2 Blocks, .7 Steals), in those 7 losses, she averaged 14.7 pts (6.1 Reb, 0.7 Assists, 2.0 Blocks, 0.4 Steals) which is not a terrible disparity but you need to play your best against the best, which Hannah regularly does.

Good season for Fournier but not really in discussion for the POY when compared to Hidalgo. Imagine if Duke had Oluchi Okanawa this year to help Toby, what could they have achieved?

You can flip that right around. How can you be the POY from a mediocre team that was NEVER in the conference race this season? POY has to mean something other than just scoring points.

Yeah and going 17-1 in a conference much, much tougher than this year's ACC and winning 31 games overall? Pitiful. And all they did AFTER Juju was lost to an injury was give eventual champ UConn their closest game of the whole Tourney. Sounds exactly like Notre Dame this season...

Most conference awards are based on conference play only. Fournier struggling in the non-conference should have no bearing on her chances for ACC POY.
