I went to a tag sale in Wethersfield today. They listed a fair amount of UConn stuff including 2004 pennants, but I found out about it too late. I did get a rubber basketball for $2 from the garage, but I have no idea who the player is. With #22 I'd expect Rudy Gay, but it doesn't look like him. I just cannot figure out who this is. Thoughts?

Looks a little like Rashad Anderson?…but he didn’t wear #22
That's what I thought when I bought it, but couldn't remember Rashad's number.

That’s probably NOBODY. Probably didn’t have the permission to use a player’s likeness so they created that guy. Save it anyway. It might tie into this season’s Mojo and be worth millions.

You're definitely the leader in the clubhouse. That makes a lot of sense. I bought it to eBay it. Unfortunately I have no space for these things.

Here are the players to wear #22 from 1995 to today per the media guide:

Antric Klaiber ............................ 1996-99
Rudy Gay.................................. 2005-06
Alex Hornat*..................................2010
Roscoe Smith.........................2011-2012
Leon Tolksdorf .......................2013-2014
Pat Lenehan*..................................2015
Terry Larrier...............................2017-18
Kwintin Williams*............................2019

Could it be Roscoe Smith? Doesn't really look like him.

My first thought was Monquencio Hardnett but that's not him.

Unless Scottie Burrell put on a LOT of hair...yeah, that ain't him.

The pic on the ball even has the white undershirt. Maybe they used Rashad, essentially, but with a different number. Didn't video games use to do something sneaky like just goofing with the names to get around likeness issues?

I thought Shad too, but knew the number wasn't correct. It does make sense that using an incorrect number was a way to get around the likeness issue.

There are probably not many of those still around and might be a rare find. I suggest getting out a sharpy and change the number to 31, then put it up for sale on eBay for a high price stating it's one of a kind. Making those alterations does in fact make it a one-of-a-kind. 😁

NIL deal for former players goes back to 1996 under a big pool like almost 3B. Yeah, me 1993, so not bitter at all.

So if the year was 1996 or later, that player's likeness could now be worth something if the player can be found, and the company making those is still liquid.

Would it violate NIL if the number on the Jersey was different, though the face was Rashad's?

IDK, maybe or maybe not depending on whether the symmetry has to be the same feature for feature, or if the face alone is enough to be violation without permission.

Intuitively though, it doesn't sound right to copy a face on the ball, but then again, look at how Avatars do that, but nobody is making money selling their avatars.

Here, it is a tag sale so does anyone whose picture is on the ball, care about it? For mass marketing, another story, I would think.

NCAA set aside a pool of like $2.4B for earlier athletes to make a claim of unauthorized use of name, image, or likeness. on back to 1996 season. But yes, if they use Rashad's face and he was not compensated he/his agent could make a claim but would need the ball as proof. You could become a great friend of his if that helps him.

Can whistleblowers be compensated?

You people are insane. That image could scarcely look less like Rashad.

I think Horatio has the correct take here. I think the person who made it didn't want any legal trouble and just drew a random black player that kind of looks like a mix of Rip, Rashad, and Chris Smith, and gave him a number that didn't match any of them.
