No. Legit contracts by Nike or Progressive don’t and can’t be reined in. They are free to contract with any player who endorses their products or services. I’m talking about the local car dealer who pays only players for the school s/he pulls for and only while she plays for that team. It’s still okay he pays reasonable value for the player’s endorsements he uses in ads or other actual services to his business. But, a mere payment by a booster for no value other than playing for the booster’s Alma mater is prohibited as 3rd party NIL

Collective payments by boosters have to fall under the House cap. They don’t really add to the 20.5 million cap per school but they do help pay for schools that struggle to provide that cap amount from their sports revenue.

A GRAY AREA: the Player’s Era Tournament: the first year’s tournament (for mbb only) paid a million to the schools for distribution to the players. The NCAA had no problem in 2024. . However, the second year (including four wbb teams) happened after the House settlement has been held up by the NCAA who is looking at whether the distribution by the schools takes it out of 3rd party player payments and makes it subject to the House cap. The last I heard in January the 2025 payments were being held up by the NCAA. I’ll try to follow up. The logical future solution is to give the money directly to the players -?not the schools
Schools will pay whatever they want and the NCAA will let them because they don't want to take another loss in court.

IMHO coaches like: Sylvia Hatchell, Andy Landers, Sue Gunter, Gail Goestenkors, Lindsay Gottlieb, Cori Close and some others were/are great recruiters! They can/did get outstanding players to join their rosters but were/are lacking in the essentials to win the big one!
It kills me to say this, but Sylvia Hatchell did win a national title in 1994.

@CammCrz1974- - Yes you're right but Charlotte Smith hit the Title winning shot with a couple seconds left Sylvia backed in IMHO as if I'm not mistaken they blew a big lead then won on Smith's great shot!

In Cori Close's case she recruited so much talent that she couldn't screw it up even if she tried!
Once UConn was removed Cori was next in line!
Vic Schaefer I think has the total package to win it all but losing star players to the portal is a serious road block!
Jeff Waltz really HAS a Championship already as he was the power behind the throne in 2006 when Maryland won the title!
He was Brenda Freese' top Assistant and in 98+% of their huddles he was the one instructing the players not Freese!
He left the next year for L'ville and has been highly successful (though without a title)!

Frese gets credit for 2006, not Walz

.-.
I think many of those listed in the poll will make one or more final fours over the 5 years but who’s next to win the title is a different question.

It is probable that Dawn and Geno will eat up most many final 4 berths over the next 4 or 5 years due to coaching ability and talent plus the ability to replenish the talent. Kim may get there a time or two. That doesn’t leave a lot of final four opportunities to move on to the championship game.

Gottlieb has a load of talent but this may be the last year for her super player. This may be her best opportunity this year but is she ready for the pressure that comes with the final four? Can she get past Geno or Dawn - or maybe both?

Vic has Booker and some great young talent coming in. I expect a slight fall off this year due the surprising portal losses but we can’t count him out. He has dealt with final four pressures quite a few times.

If this is the case, shouldn't the same be said for Vic?

I might look stupid when the games are played (won't be the first time), but I thought Texas was going to be a half-step below national title level before the portal losses. I don't see it for them this year, and first post-Booker year would be unlikely. So that puts Vic at 67.

Gary Blair is the oldest to win his first title at 65.

Oldest coach to win his first on the men's side is Phog Allen at 66, but that's a bit misleading bc the tourney didn't exist for the first half of his career. Kansas claims two recognized titles before that. Lute Olson at 62 is next.

67 is not the same now as it was forty or even 20 years ago, but I think it is fair to believe Vic's window has closed.

Vic’s window is not closed- but I think it’s closing and will close after this batch of freshmen is gone.

FWIW Walz was an assistant at Maryland in 2006 and Vic was associate head coach at A&M in 2011.
This might be a place to ask why Coach Ivey didn't make this list. She did, after all, beat one of those coaches listed to make the Elite 8 this spring for the first time. Or did she not make it because she was an assistant coach to Muffet McGraw in 2018? Has a great set of six freshman coming in that could be a forceful unit in years to come.

.-.
ND not being listed aside (I wouldn't have voted for Niele until they get legitimate centers.):
  • Like a few here, I would've voted for Vic if you asked this question before the portal opened. But he lost some prime players and that caught my attention: Lee and Crump will make a difference.
  • Gottlieb has three of the top players from each of the last few classes, but do three Alpha's do the trick collectively?
  • So, I'm my next choice is for Lawson to make a run with Crump joining an already very good team.

However, I think she'll have a heck of a hard time with S. Carolina next year.
Now...if the Irish can get a tall center to go with our power forward (Leah Macy), shooting guard (Jenica Lewis) and legion of wings (led by Jacy Abii), we could challenge, too. 😁
