The Cavaliers’ accomplishments along their historic ride should not be overlooked — anyone writing the Huskies’ name into the history books for their accomplishments in the past two seasons has to also make space for Virginia.

Take out the historic UMBC loss. Add a national championship and it’s UVa. Hell of an argument there.
It's still not even close. Virginia got curb stomped by 16 seed UMBC and then squeaked by in a bunch of tournament games to win it all. UConn dominated in the tournaments like nobody else in history. The Cavaliers team that won it all is one of the worst champions I can ever remember.

Yeah I was joking. But that was basically the premise of the article lol

I don't know if anyone has seen this, but my buddy just texted me the link. Maybe not even worth a thread because of how outrageous of a claim this is, but nonetheless... have at it.

Virginia men’s basketball versus Connecticut — who had the better two-year run?

P.S. Yes, they are referring to the 2 year run that in "year 1" they were the first ever team to lose to a 16 seed in the NCAA tournament :D
I literally laughed out loud when after I clicked on that link and saw the headline. I needed the comic relief.

Maybe the writer was bored. Ok, not hating. But maybe the writer should write about what Tony Bennett will do to construct an offense that will score more than 14 points in a half of an elimination game.

Totally agree up til your last sentence, which is just wrong...that team was stacked

They have a point. IF Virginia didn't get blown out by #16 UMBC, AND if they then beat Kansas St, AND if they then beat Kentucky, AND if they then beat Loyola, AND if they then beat Michigan, AND if they then beat Villanova, then they would have won the championship.

For that reason, I have no choice but to assume that they did all of that and had very successful back to back title runs

There are many programs who have had a 2 year regular season run that exceeded our last two years. Hell, we even have a few ourselves.

But nobody has exceeded our 2-year NCAA Tournament run by itself in at least 50 years.

The funny thing is I live in Virginia and I have yet to meet a real UVA basketball fan. It's Duke/NC for the most part with some VCU basketball fans mixed in.

Team was very good but man did they get lucky A LOT.

71-56 W vs 16-seed Gardner Webb (UVA was LOSING at halftime. Again!)
53-49 W vs 12-seed Oregon in S16 (Oregon was winning by 3 with 5 minutes to go)
80-75 W in OT vs 3-seed Purdue (UVA missed FT which lead to that tip into the backcourt, then halfcourt pass to Diakite to tie the game at the buzzer)
63-62 W over 5-seed Auburn (should have lost, again, if not for that awful foul with 0.6 seconds left)
85-77 W in OT over 3-seed TTU (had to make a 3 pointer with 10 seconds left to send it to OT)

Quite literally the luckiest team in tournament history.

and in that Gardner-Webb game in the first round, who by the way was a powerhouse #16 seed, Virginia was down 28-14 and having flashbacks to losing to #16 UMBC from the prior year. Tony Bennett had to call a timeout.

They were the luckiest team in the tournament history.
