Who would you want leading your team if you could pick three right now?

Besides Dawn. Who else? Even if they aren’t at Power 5.

The job Yolett McPhee McCuin has done to turn around Mississippi is nothing short of tremendous. I remember her first year on the job and I thought she was going to bomb big coming from Jacksonville and knowing zip about her. Amazing doesn’t do justice describing what she’s accomplished

Joni Taylor at Georgia had Georgia playing better than when Andy left. They’ve dropped a bit this year but she’s pretty good

The KY Coach Kyra Elzy just turned around her season. She went from someone I thought couldn’t Coach to someone who knows what she’s doing once EDWARDS got back. Great run for them. Real test is next year.

Felecia Legette-Jack at Buffalo is one of few Black female coaches to get a second shot after being let go at a Power 5 school (Indiana).

I have my doubts about Harris at Auburn but I like the way her team works. Especially in that win over Tenn. Tremendous teamwork.

Got to be several up and comers out there

No one has their team playing any better than Elzy right now. It's been an up and down year but if I had money on any of the above teams going into March (besides SC), it's her.

Adia Barnes is another big name. She's done a great job even though Arizona is struggling as of late.

Solid list so far. I would also add:

Tomekia Reed (Jackson State)
Margaret Richards (Alabama A&M)
Ty Grace (Howard)

I like seeing the recent opportunities for black coaches increase and was curious to see how deep the current coaching ranks were for black female coaches and who might be waiting in the wings to move up just like McPhee-McCuin did. Not trying to make a racial statement. I like seeing everyone succeed. Even those dastardly polk a dotted male coaches if they can coach and recruit! Heard there’s a decent one in the northeast somewhere and another along the banks of the Ohio river across the bridge from Clarksville Ind

Why only black over any female coach?
Because a majority of Division I women’s college basketball players are women of color, but the ratio of female coaches color is not anywhere near proportionate. These conversations are not to suggest that coaches be hired based upon the color of their skin, but to point out the number of highly qualified women of color who are passed over for head coaching opportunities in an effort to draw the coach-player of color ratio closer.

It’s not about mathematics, of course; I think it also stems from the idea of raising student-athletes into leaders, and an important core value of that is representation.

Thank you

Some more black WBB coaches are mentioned in this 2018 article:

Michelle Clark-Heard, Western Kentucky
CHARLOTTE SMITH, ELON
NIKKI FARGAS of LSU resigned after 10 years to become President of the WNBA Las Vegas Aces

TARRELL ROBINSON, NORTH CAROLINA A&T
Freddie Murray, Grambling State

Kara Lawson, Duke is an up and comer.

This happened after that article, but an update:
Michelle Clark-Heard is now at Cincinnati.

Not quite "up and comers," but some coaches that have been here, there and continue to be:

- Katrina Merriweather coached Wright State to the NCAA's and has moved to Memphis State Tigers.

- Dianne Richardson, who also coaches Tigers, but those of Towson State, who are currently 23-6. Richardson, as an assistant, most notably worked with one Jonquel Jones at George Washington. (BTW, HC Jonathan Tsipis had two superb assisants on that GW team: Richardson and Megan Duffy, now at Marquette.)

And I'd be remiss if I didn't add my alma mater's coach to this list:

- Niele Ivey. NCAA champion as both a player and assistant coach at ND. Went from 10-10 to 23-8 in second year (so far) at HC at Notre Dame.

I really like Tomekia Reed at Jackson State; I think she has the ability to turn a program around.

Shereka Wright at UTA just won the Sun Belt title and AQ bid in her 2nd here as HC.

Haven't heard that name in a while....she was a fantastic player in her day. Glad to see she's finding success as a coach.

They came really close to beating some Power 5 schools this season. They left me thoroughly impressed.

Jackson State is #87 in the NET. I'd like to know the last time that a team from the SWAC or MEAC was in the top 100 of RPI/NET.

They played "guarantee" games at Texas, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Miami and Mississippi State, none of which was decided by more than 13 points. Lost to Arkansas by 4 and to Miami by 5.

Yeah that's not going so well anymore. She could be on her way out soon.

They also just got transfer Angel Jackson, the underperforming Burger girl from USC.

My wife bought a shirt in the same design as Lisa Bluder of Iowa wore in honor of Black History Month. The shirt simply says - Vivian & Caroline Pokey & Dawn & Adia

Very nice.
