Which big moments in sports history ( shots / hits / goals / touchdowns /etc ) would have been overturned with modern technology ?

As a Sox fan, it might have been nice to have VAR in the 1999 ALCS. Without the umps gifting the first two games to the Stanks, we might have broke the curse five years earlier.

But as things turned out, I couldn't be happier. 2004 was glorious, and my team has given me some great runs in the last 20 years. Meanwhile the Spanx are stuck on one title this millennium while their fans whine that all the calls go against them.

I wouldn't change a thing, lol.

I'm not sure. If the Raiders TD vs the Patriots in 2022 wasn't overturned, when the whole world saw the receiver was out of bounds and there even a chalk cloud, then I'm not sure about the guarantee of replays

When they can't overturn the obvious, just drop the system

Laettner would have been tossed for stomping on the Kentucky player’s chest, Duke loses and the Fab 5 becomes the first and last team to win a Championship with five freshman.

Bonus - we don’t have to watch that fudging highlight every single weekend leading up to and during March Madness.

I’m still not convinced Jeter’s flip to home vs Oakland in the playoffs was in time for Giambi to be out. It felt like the umpire called him out for not sliding but was watching the tag (high) while not watching when he stepped on the plate.

Did Ed Ambruster interfere with Carlton Fisk in game 3 of the 1975 World Series, which cost the Sox the game? Consensus is he did but it wasn't called and the Sox lost the series in 7 games. Would an overturned call have changed the Series?

Yankees 96 ALCS vs Baltimore. Jeter's home run was due to fan interference. The Yankees go on to tie then win the game and eventually the World Series vs Atlanta
More likely they lose and Steinbrenner breaks up the team.

Armando Galaragga of the Tigers gets a perfect game taken away from a terrible call at first base by umpire Jim Joyce. At least Joyce admitted he made a mistake and was very emotional about it.

The sad thing is that to this day the probably feels the worst about out of anyone. It's not in a record book, but Armando knows he threw a perfect game.
Also, Joyce is considered one of the greatest umpires of the modern era. He was well respected by the players. They he even named him the #1 umpire. It's ironic that he'll be remembered for a call he blew instead of being one of the few who didn't inject his personality into games and got the vast majority of the calls correct.

1969 game 3, I believe it was Al Weis ran well outside the baseline to first base. No call made, changed the momentum of the series. Earl got tossed. Total BS non call

In 2010 Tiger pitcher Armando Gallarago lost a perfect game with 2 outs in the ninth inning. Runner out by half a step on what should have been a 3 to one ground out. Umpire called him safe. Unbelievably bad call.

Kevin Ollies assist to Reggie Miller in 2002 NBA Playoffs, round 1 vs. Nets, game 5 in OT. Reggie hit a 40 foot three to send the game to a second OT. Should not have counted.

It was JC Martin. And you must've been fuming at Cleon Jones' shoe polish HBP too :p

I'll throw in Jeffrey Meier helping the Yankees get an undeserved HR.

Almost every game would change in some way.

The Giants win the NFL CHAMPIONSHIP 1958. The game that "changed football" doesn't happen. And that changes every everything from that date on.

Did Tate George get the shot off in time ?
Probably not. I don't think Derek Fisher got his off in 0.4 seconds either.

The Yankees have benefited a lot. Beyond the several that have already been mentioned, they had a playoff game against Minnesota in 2009 or 2010 where the Twins hit a fly ball down the line that replay shows clearly bounced in fair territory but was called foul. It was tied at the time and that would have either scored a run or put the go-ahead run on 2nd in the late innings.

Edit: OK, I looked it up. Game 2 of the 2009 ALDS. 3-3 in the 11 inning, Joe Mauer leading off, would have had a very good chance of scoring and tying the series.

I would say the Patriots have at least 2 calls. One would have changed history. The plowing of the field against the Miami Dolphins for the field call. The other one was the absurd Tuck Rule against the Raiders in the playoff game.

Not more UConn oriented with this? Larry Taylor's fake fair catch against Louisville would have taken the booth about half a second to correct (and probably caused them to laugh at the call).

#1 answer:

Maradona handball goal in 1986. That would be one fewer World Cup title for the Arjees.
They would have won anyway . I watched that game live. Argentina was simply a better and that gave England a great excuse for losing .
Maradona’s run on his other goal in real time was the most spectacular play ever and even English fans know it .
He went through their D like they were practice cones .
But “ The Hand of God” will not be denied

This, to me, looks like an uncontroversially good basket. Was there debate about it at the time?

Pretty much every America's Cup until the 1980s.

From what I remember every ship had to be made in its home country, then sailed to Newport. It was a great built in home court advantage.

Modern tech probably could have gotten better ships to Newport in better condition to win.

Off topic a bit, but I still love the "Warning, the Surgeon General..." sail put up as a ship was about to beat a ship sponsored by the tobacco industry.
