When Ross plays were bettè

I wrote a similar post a few weeks ago and unfortunately he got hurt
He’s the most intense best defender we have. Hes the chemistry piece we need
Mullens off the bench makes sense for us
I thought for awhile there our best 5 could be him at the 3 and Mullins at the two, as it gives us size and defense. He's been rusty since back.

You are being kind. Outside of the block, he actually hurt us on the floor. He was that bad. He and Malachi were brutal.
Hurley must be the worst coach ever because even though Ross was bad and hurt us other than the block according to your expert analysis, he played Ross for 19 minutes.

Inconceivable!

Ross is usually too slow to stay in front of his man and too slow to rebound. His offensive game is limited to the occasional put back dunk or wide open spot up 3. He’ll never be good enough to be a starter. Stewart is better defensively than Ross but about the same on the offensive end. Both need to improve because we are getting absolutely no offense from our bench.
That is wrong. Stewart has more moves off the dribble and actually can get his shot off with some good moves near the basket. Problem is he isn't that agreessive with that part of his game and when he misses one shot now he stops trying to look for his offense. Ross is very limited offensively but does if great effort. Ross has improved his D this year and I wouldn't call him slow. Maybe not strong to rebound.

The kid is a junior at this point - I'm kind of over that he needs to "progress". If he goes out a couple games, I don't think there should be a major lag for him getting back up to speed. He's been in this system 3 years. They practice a ton.
That's what I alluded to in the 2nd paragraph in my post above at #12. Can he contribute to this team? Yes, he already has. The question is what can we expect out of him going forward? In no way can this team expect consistent production from him. I think the same can be said for Stewart, but he has shown more upside and has more experience in big games. I really hope they prove me wrong going forward, but like you said, it's been 3 years. Most of Ross' issues are between the ears, but sometimes players never solve that.

I think if they were starters who played 25+ minutes a game with plays called for them, they can score just as well as Karaban.

The only difference is Karaban gets endless shots and rope. Even through the dry spells which he's had plenty of throughout his career. Ross and Stew aren't afforded the luxury to do that and still have plays called for them.

The only difference offensively between Alex and Ross/Stewie is Alex gets a longer leash from Hurley?

Really? That’s the only difference?

I love Ross and Stew but cmon

Top is 1 of Solo/Braylon and 2 of Stewart/Ross/Karaban.
Bottom is 2 of Solo/Braylon and 1 of Stewart/Ross/Karaban.

Top 200 opponents only.

In the Nova game, we were +6 with Solo+Braylon and +3 with only 1 of them. But for the season, the lineups with only 1 have been better.
Wow. This is a great visual. Thanks for sharing.

What he is saying besides that he didn't play well. They aren't discrediting that big block. He did fall for a shot fake earlier and got beat off the dribble badly and was lucky the Villanova player missed an easy shot. I will say he did play good D as well as Stew. They just don't give us much on the offensive side. J Ross missed a wide open corner 3 that Alex passed to him which kind of is the norm for him offensively recently.
That shot fake play was strange. I only saw it live but it looked like the guy dribbling pur two hands on the ball which would have made it a double dribble violation. Did anyone see the replay on TV? Ross obviously bit on it because he have thought the guy picked up his dribble too.

Okay I'm finally watching the second half of Nova and it's kind of crazy the amount of times an open Ross was looked off in the second half.

Even the announcers pointed it out in one of their play analysis.

Ross' hammy seems up to about 85%. Better but he may never be 100% this season with that kind of injury, we'll see. When he got used on that crossover vs. 'Nova he seemed to lose focus but I've watched that played over and over. Tell me if I'm wrong but I see a double-dribble there when both hands were on the ball. And, Ross did cause a tie-up on the ensuing rebound.

cRoss-over

Even at 100%, while's a plus defender, he's a hole on offense especially in anxious ball-handling situations. Coaches scheme to have us funnel the ball to him. He also almost caused a TO by not passing in to Silas after a late made basket. Fortunately, Silas got open again.

I love what he can bring defensively but until his offensive and head games catch up, he'll be a situational piece.

Definitely a double dribble. Ross is being reamed for that play when it should be directed towards the refs who missed it. Nice video capture.

Check out video in post 37 by microfich. It confirms your observation.

I thought the premise of the thread was to make a joke. Love Ross and he is the most athletic guy on the floor and great for the highlight reels at times, but to replace Mullins was funny. Well done!!

No on “Mullens” but he could get minutes subbing for Stew.

These are the posts that make me feel like sometimes you're trolling us a bit. Neither has nearly the offensive skillset of Karaban. Not on-ball, not off-ball, not even close.

I even credit Ross for forcing the violation that the refs didn’t call. Perkins looked like he was pulling up for the jumper & quickly realized Ross was all over it. So he puts the ball back on the floor hoping the refs didn’t notice that he had two hands on the ball. And of course, they didn’t.

My take as well. It was a blocked shot or shot clock violation otherwise.

I am pro Ross. He's come back from injury. He makes plays. Before his injury he was playing great. We need his size and athleticism. I'd play him more and either Milender and / or Furphy. Smith needs to sit.

I really wanted that corner 3 that rattled in and out to drop for Ross. He’s had a few 3’s post injury that have looked good but didn’t fall.

Kid needs to see one drop through the net and I think he’ll be back to contributing on offense the way he was pre-injury. Not a crucial piece of the offense, but giving us a dagger 3 or momentum 3/dunk.

Until then, he just needs to keep hustling and playing lockdown D.

My seat was right behind him and I stood up as soon as it left his hand. I thought it was going down.

Interesting. Your exact words can be used for me and Corey Floyd when he took that last shot in regulation at Providence. I was directly behind him and 10 rows behind the PC bench. I thought that shot was going to be the game winner. Thankfully it wasn't. Here is hoping that UConn defeats Providence handily tomorrow.
