They can play with 8 teams. The BE did it. Why can't they?

They can play with 8, but I believe it would cancel their current TV contract. The Big 12 got a sweatheart TV deal last year and they need to maintain 10 teams to keep that contract. If they don't, the contract from last year will be canceled and have to be renegotiated. With the loss of aTm and Missouri, there is very little chance that they will be able to get the same money they got last year. If they end up getting less money per team....then this whole Big 12 conference mess will blow up again.

So said in short...they need 10 to mantain their gift TV contract and keep the Big 12 together. That is why BYU is so important to them...they cannot get a Big East team in the conference for next year. Everyone laughs at the BE $5MM exit fee...but the 27 month requirement has turned out to be a huge issue for this round of expansion...it may just save the Big East (although it is debatable if the BE is worth saving...but that is a different discussion).

On the other hand, if they invite Louisville the 27 month thing may not be an issue because the football side of the Big East may just dissolve.

That's the only way it will work for the B12 with BE teams. They need 10 for next year (2012) and they are not getting that from the B12. Remember BE basketball schools can hold any of the football schools on that 27 months exit so even if FB BE dissolves, basketball schools can still force the 27 months exit policy. B12 gonna have to get their 10th via BYU or elsewhere if they want 10 for 2012.

No matter what the BE will be around for 27 months at least.

It just might look like the Titanic going down in slow motion.

True. B12, on the other hand, is in similar situation long term wise. I am sure in 6 years this realignment stuff will go full steam again with OU and Texas flirting with someone.

Without the benefit of the constitution/bylaws, who knows what the procedure is for winding up the fb side.

If Big 12 takes WVU, L'ville and Cincy, would the hoops teams want to force them to be around until 2013-2014? For every all sport fb member that leaves, amother all-sport member must replace it.

There are no attractive options out there.

ECU sucks in bb, as does Tulane

So UCF, SMU, UH already making the hoops teams squirm. Imagine if bb gets wateted down even more?

According to the coaches hoops poll, the best basketball teams are from football schools. The football schools leaving is what is leading to the BB side getting watered down. To me, that is the ironic part.

Is this true? Could they replace the teams that left with San Jose St. and Tulane? I'm not so sure the contract stays the same.

Im not sure this is true I have to believe that the football schools are protected and could leave if there is no more football in the BE. There is supposedly a clause in the BE contract that allows for a clean split between the football and BB schools I feel like this would be a part of it.

Remember that going to 12 was a condition Mizzou put on their staying - not the only one, but one. Their (Mizzou) leaving could mean the B12 goes to 10 and pauses.

Honestly, I don't know who's in worse shape - the B12(10) or the BE(west). The B12 is not viable as long as UT sits at the table. Besides, OU dreams of a day they will call the Pacific Ocean their home away from home.

OU has no interest in the Pac other than as leverage to keep UT in check. It was all a sham from the beginning.

It really would be to the basketball only schools best interest to let the football schools go before the 27 months. If they were to form a basketball only league being able to schedule teams like Conn,Pitt,WVrg,Lou,Cinn,Syr on a yearly basis would be better for the basketball league and also for the football schools that left. It could be an espn challenge yearly which could add money to both sides.

The Big 12 has a Presidents' meeting scheduled for Monday.

Look for the decision on the number and selection of Big East teams to be poached to be made at that time.

You seem to know a lot about this contract. Is there anything in the contract that allows the network to renegotiate pending changes in teams? I would think they would renegotiate downwards based on the changes.

The schools that want to leave will offer the BB schools $$ to vote to allow them to leave early. Vote 'yes' and you get some cash. No real incentive for the BB schools to turn down cash for letting something happen early that is going to happen anyway. Likely that some left behind FB schools would take the cash too.

Their original contract was for their 12 teams circa 2010. Dave Brown at ESPN cut a last minute deal with Big 12 (after Nebraska had left and right after CU left). He said ESPN would keep paying out the same total $$$ they had been paying, for the 10 remaining teams. This deal kept the Big 12 from breaking apart and going to the Pac (then) 10.

The Big 12 contract is not going to stay at the same amount just because they add one if they lose one. Their conference membership has changed (A&M out and TCU in, swap WV for MO)/ The Big 12 will still need ESPN to sign off on their TV contract. Whether they go to 12 or stay at 10 or contract to 9, it will all require ESPN's blessing.

OU, Boren especially, wanted into the Pac 12 badly. They were rejected and told OU could not get in without Texas. Then Boren tried to make it out to sound like they were choosing. They did not. Larry Scott could not get the votes to take OU and OSU without Texas.

The problem is the 9-game schedule contract with 10 teams. No room for error when Missouri leaves. That gives them some money to throw at BYU to help accomodate their 2013 schedule and possibly Missouri to stay an extra year in 2012. I doubt they go for filler but might feel they have to....
