Someone suggested above that UConn could have won 40 - NO - not mathematically possible.

The Pre-Season WNIT winner is, to the best of my knowledge, the only team that plays 31 regular season games (I suppose the runner-up, but since they obviously lost, they couldn't win 31). UConn played 30. Most teams play 29 (plenty of other 30's, though, and a few played 28 or 27).

It does have to do with how many games in-season tournaments are counted as, although I think the above folks paraphrased, rather than quoted, the rules.

You could play more games if you were seeded lower in your conference tourney, but as Phil so excellently points out, you certainly then couldn't win 40+.

Frank that sounds like it applies to men. They can play seven NCAA games if a play-in. I don't see how seven is possible for women.

You are right, that was slanted towards the men's game with the extremes. Just trying to help Wonkster out.

Plus, (I think) it isn't mathematically possible to win 43 games. To play 43, you have to be a low seed in your tourney.
I was about to write that, Phil. It is possible to play 43 but not win 43 games because of the seeding process in the Big East and most conferences.

It would be a special feet to be the only team to ever go 40-0. But this is a though row to hoe at this point!

The statistics will need an astrick next to them if they are achieved in a 40 game season. For example, most 3 pointers in a season (extra game could make a difference); total points; number of assists; number of rebounds; steals, etc...
