He's our best big, but as long as he's getting most of the minutes I don't really care if it's off the bench. And Samson seems to have 4-6 points at the U16 timeout most games anyway so it's working

The whole starting/not-starting debate is ridiculous.

Samson had been playing really well recently but I thought he looked tired last night. Unfortunately Tarris committed 2 early fouls.
And ended with 3. So he gets 3 fouls in the first half so what? He can still get to 25 minutes in the game. Last night was 16.

I ask because its mystifying to me why Hurley doesn't even try a change.

Starting Reed puts immense pressure immediately on their bigs, which could create early foul problems, especially if we deliberately feed him. Samson is not that kind of threat so Centers can roam just looking out for the once or twice alley-oop. When Reed is on the floor opponents can not double team or roam consequently leaving a UConn player free. With Samson its 4 on 5, defense not worrying about him, particularly if Hassan is out.

People will say starting doesn't matter but our best big is not able to set the tone.

We've got to make a change somewhere or there is no 3peat. I know its late season to be making adjustments but this to me is necessary to try.
HE IS NOT STARTING.

Play Johnson and Reed together for 5 minutes a game. Problem solved.
I dount you meant it this way, but starting both of them and playing the first 5 minutes would at least eliminate this recurring discussion.

Then, we can see where the partisans scurry to work their next version of the argument, or their next argument. That's the greater, and unsolved, problem.

Oddly Samson Johnson is incredibly good in the first 3 minutes or so of games. He usually gets the majority of his points during that first 4 minute stretch

Samson has been playing great recently. Do not change anything and the minutes splits should split depending on matchups.

Reed gives the team the best rebounding and low post scoring. Takes pressure off the other guys. Changes things up

So play him for 3 minutes then take him out.

I suppose you know more than Dan Hurley, why aren’t you the head coach?
This opinion is such an unintelligent cop out.

Like excuse someone for having a knowledgeable basketball opinion and also being informed about the game.

Roles matter more than minutes.

The six points Reed had in the semifinals were his only points in the three games we played against Creighton.

He definitely is better than Samson on defense against Kalkbrenner so he should have played more.

He did get the majority of minutes in the second half and would have played more in the first if he didn’t pick up two quick fouls. His inability to stay out of foul trouble in the first half was the only reason his minutes were limited. That’s on him and not Hurley. Anyone could make a claim that if he started he would avoid fouling. Certainly possible but unlikely.

Once he entered the game in the second half he was only taken out for a short interval because he was gassed.

Reed had trouble moving Kalkbrenner on offense in all three games and was blocked several times in the first two games. It amazes me how strong Kalk is. You would not guess it by looking at his body.

For the most part the platooning of Samson and Reed have worked well this season. But not against Creighton. The five is not perfect. But it has been the least of the problems for this team.
