The lack of playing top teams on the road especially in hostile environments. UConns devastating defense on top of the crowd will hurt MD. It gets in their heads. UConn beat MD in a hostile enviornment earlier in the season at MD and UConn wasnt 100% at the time (Lou's bucket game). Its tuff playing UConn and even tuffer when UConns fans show up. MD has some very good seniors and very good freshman and it will take alot to stop the UConn steamroller which is on an unbelievable roll right now. Ive noticed alot of changes in UConn over the past few games and I am very pleased to see the lack of fouls committed. Fouls are the one assassin that can hurt UConn along with injuries. Ive seem a much improved team that is playing very loose and very confident.

That was a point that came out in the HBO special yesterday - Geno and the staff talking about 'no more offensive fouls' from specifically Gabby and Napheesa. They will pick up some defensive fouls, but the real killer will be if they get a charge or an offensive rebounding foul or an illegal screen.

One thing we don't have to worry about is Lou getting an offensive rebounding foul, since she has never gotten an offensive rebound in her entire life. ;)

I didn't see it, but I agree about being very careful on the offensive end. It's easier to limit those types of fouls. Gabby did have one over-the-back call against Cuse, but both she and Pheesa were more careful about driving.

I thought the refs allowed a fair amount of body contact against Cuse. I have no major complaints. We shot more FTs than the Orange.

Great point, Tony. I think it was Pheesa who picked up her 2nd foul 1/2 way through the 2Q against Syracuse, and, with the comfortable lead, I just figured Natalie would be sent in immediately. No so. That got me thinking: this is something Geno is making the team work on....

Maryland's biggest problem against UConn (and other top teams) has been their inability to play a full 4o minutes of top tier basketball. That has been their problem ever since their NC season.

You have identified one of the key elements of a brilliant coaching job by Geno and staff. He has said all along that part of his coaching strategy this year was to hide their weaknesses. You can see it in their defense where they play with hands up and not to foul. Also, you can see they've deployed a switching system that mitigates fouling. On offense, they have virtually eliminated the drive directly to the basket with the shoulder down. They have also relied more on the perimeter game and rotation versus past teams.
An interesting stat, which IMO reflects the coaching strategy , is that total assists equal turnovers plus fouls. Most people will think this has nothing to do with anything but I think its a direct reflection of what Geno is trying ton accomplish. No other UCONN team has come close to achieving this so kudos to our team for great execution.

Then there's that little UCLA gnat too.

A gnat which is about to have a close encounter with the windshield of a Lamborghini running like a scalded team of Huskies.
