and did we sell it with the BigEast name? My son and I are arguing, he says we lost it when all the teams left. I say we sold it with the name, which I deeply regret.

What does an automatic qualifier mean. Should have read before hitting enter.

I believe it was lost with the playoff system and the renegotiation of all the major bowl contracts with the conferences. Even if the AAC didn't sell the Big East name to the Catholics and had no teams defect at the end, it was probably going to get relegated to the G5 anyway because perception was it was a terrible FB conference. And in the eyes of the powers that be perception is king.

The Big East automatic qualifier was lost before we sold the Big East name.

The automatic qualifier that remains is the one for the best non-P5 team.

I think if Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers, Ville, WVU and even BCU were still with a Big East the BE would NOT have been left out

As long as the AAC continues to improve, as long as UConn continues to improve there shouldn't be a problem. But, they'll have to earn it so that is what it is. It'll make for interesting Boneyard banter season to season. It will be more rewarding climbing a tougher mountain when you reach the top. Most likely the playoff system will go from 4 to 8 and opportunities for UConn to play for a national title should be there. Hopefully by that time the Huskies will be making noise in the ranks of the top 10 on very good seasons. Just like everybody else.

It went away with the end of the BCS. Every P5 conference entered individual contracts for major bowls to take there champions if they are left out of the playoff. Those contracts also agree to take the second/third place teams from said P5 if the champion is selected for the playoff.

The ACC/SEC/B1G/ND contracted with the Orange Bowl for it's two slots.
The Sugar Bowl contracted with the B12/SEC for it's two slots
The B1G/Pac12 contibute to control the two Rose Bowl slots

The Fiesta Bowl, Cotton Bowl, and Peach Bowl don't have contractual conference tie-ins. They fill there slots by the Committee from their Top Ten teams with input from the Bowls themselves. Mostly its a draft from a pool of eligible teams with one lone slot reserved for the Committees highest ranked G5 team.

So in essence the Big East Auto Bid to one of the four traditional Big Bowls morphed through contractual agreements into a sharecrop arrangement amongst the big guys and other peasants in one of the three lesser Big Bowls.
