Brillo-head's
Do you have a link to her piece on Pat's illness? I don't remember reading that one.I always enjoyed reading Alysa's blog, she always shot straight from the hip and let the chips fall where they may.
Her piece on Pat Summitt's illness was outstanding!
Totally agree with you, most especially re "cauliflower head" (my description of your "brillo-head" !!One thing that I've learned through the years is that people hate change and anyone/anything that upsets their comfortable status quo. I'm old enough to remember Hank Aaron's march toward his record-breaking home run record and the racist vitriol that he faced. The man actually got death threats. The threats weren't because a man was breaking the record; it was because a black man was doing it. The people who saw whites as superior to blacks had their little worlds threatened and lashed out.
The tweet by ol' whatisname (I'm not giving him any more attention) was a watered down version of the same. The UConn women have the temerity to threaten Brillo-head's narrow little view of women so he reacted with sarcasm and condescension.
Hopefully as the dinosaurs of prejudice fade away, we'll learn to be a more accepting society. I just hope I live long enough to see it.

Seems Nera White said some of the same during her life. Seems the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Seems the legacy of the Auriemma family is in good hands."It seems as if in order to be seen as successful, or even to be seen at all, in this world, it has to be approved of by old white men...
... But of course. These are male teams. Female teams are in the sandbox now, and the man. Cannot. Take. It."
ARTICLE
Ally's blog has since been taken down, the post she made about Pat Summitt along with it. Here's a link to it as copied to another blog.Do you have a link to her piece on Pat's illness? I don't remember reading that one.
I feel like this article could be applied to more things beyond basketball. Instead of old white men, you really could say old white straight Christian men. Basically the old guard of American power and control determined to dig their heals in preventing progress beyond the Ward and June Cleaver world in which they are most comfortable. It's one of the reasons the country is such a mess politically.Eh, that's Shaunessy's shtick. He rips on Bill Belichick for every little mistake he makes...the guy who's only the most successful NFL coach of our time. Dan loves the failure of teams, especially in his neighborhood, because it gives him something to talk about.
Most general sports media pundits and casual sports fans don't follow WCBB, but in today's age everybody has to have an opinion. As they don't have anything else to say about the game, they poo-poo UCONN' dominance. Perhaps it justifies their unrelated lack of interest.
And FWIW, I've seen black and female pundits both comment that 'UCONN hurts the game'. But yes, blame old white men.

How does a stupid opinion by one uninformed sportswriter end up in screeds like this against senior citizens of a particular gender?
How does it result in childish name calling based on a lack of hair straightener?
How can one not realize that if young women, middle aged or old women gave a darn about women's sports men's opinions wouldn't matter?
How can one not note that the recent census of this board that suggests that men may be a tad more interested in women's basketball than any other gender? The same census suggests that older folks are interested as well.
Lastly, am I, deep into my declining years, a bit too sensitive?

That's a political talking point not based in reality. Old white men are some of the biggest proponents of WCBB. Reminds them of the game they used to play. Check the BY census. Without old white men, this board would lose 70% of it's members.

What does your lack of research and statistics tell you about "old white women"?That's true. But although I lack the research and the statistics to support it, I still would venture a guess that you're talking about a very small percentage of the overall population of "old white men," and that a much larger percentage of them would lean more toward Shaughnessy than away from him.
But, that's only a guess, and only based upon my own observations and conversations out in the wide world away from the Boneyard.
