This is basically his freshman year, I expect the flashes you see from talented underclassmen and general improvement by years end. He’d be a starter on lesser teams, but we can’t afford to let him play through the jitters if we wanna accomplish something big this year.

I think it’s becoming clear that no matter how hard the practices are or how great the coaches are at teaching, these guys need real game minutes to completely figure it out. Hell, Castle didn’t really become the Stephon Castle we all remember until like mid-February getting all sorts of playing time last year.

Hopefully the game slows down for Ross sooner rather than later because I think we’re going to need him to become a poor man’s Castle to achieve what we hope this season. Expecting Diarra to shut down a wing 4 inches taller than him isn’t ideal.

He played 100 minutes last year and half of them in November, so he's functionally a freshman. Right now his body moves faster than his mind can. Freak athlete that has to slow it down and learn how to play fundamental basketball

He has all the tools to be a really good player. Someone here once said that he could be like an RJ Luis type player and I love that comparison. Wiry wing that can get out and run, score, and defend. Exchange some of RJ's overall scoring ability for Ross' higher 3P potential

Unfortunately I think this is a project for next year, it would be insane amounts of development to get him there this year. This year I hope he can develop into just a solid player off the bench

I actually think Ross gave us a good 5 minutes in the first half against Texas, his defense looked good and that was a key 5 minutes not showing up in the box score. He's incredibly raw with a broken shot and handle, if those tools can be ironed out then he can be a very dangerous weapon for us.

Hope the game slows down for him as he gets more run and settles into a role. That being said too many turnovers and lack of shooting so far. For someone so athletic he settles for the quick 3 too soon.

He covered Johnson well the one three he took while Ross was covering was challenged and he missed it. Ross is our best hope on this roster to cover big wings like Johnson. Diarra did the best that could be done covering a player clearly at least 4” talller. Johnson acted like he was not there on the three point attempts. Although Diarra did a reasonably good job keeping him in front of him but that just resulted in jump shots both turn around and straight up that Diarra could not challenge. I think Johnson would not have hit double figures against Castle/

Not saying to expect any thing like Steph defense from Ross but he can be taught how to play solid defense. Hurley even said it a video over the summer he needed Ross to be a lock down defender. He said it while his fist was semi closed kind of imitating what happens when you turn the knob on a locked door. Wish I could find the video.

But Hurley knows he is the only player we have (maybe Abraham) who has the size and athleticism to cover a big wings like like Johnson.

We need a defender against 1-4 taller shooters. Period. With all the shooting and offense we have we can afford to have an elite defender off the bench who can come in when needed to shut down elite taller shooters. Looking backward we had both Castle and Andre Jackson before him who were both 6-6 and excellent as defenders. If it's not Ross at this point then let's see what Abraham can do as well. There is time to experiment with this before year end tourneys and of course next year as well. I agree with the in game learning. The lights are a lot brighter with 10,000+ screaming fans than at practice so mistakes are going to happen. We will undoubtedly have to face that kind of talent at tourney time.

Some kids need/take more time. D1 ain't easy. Usually for 4 year players its their 3rd year when we know better what their trajectory could become.

Fans can only hope that him practicing each day with NBAers, AAs and semi pros will motivate, boost his skills and help him gain confidence.

As for right now he looks tentative and unsure, perhaps scared to err.

I couldn't agree with this more: I don't know when we all of a sudden starting to expect freshman or sophomores to be fully operational from the jump.

We all have 18-24 years olds in our life. Their "fully mature" facade melts away when, oh...for example, your 23 year old sister in law house sits for you over the Thanksgiving holiday and leaves a full $50 cheese platter in your fridge for a week uncovered and wonders why it's completely destroyed.

Also, the human brain doesn't fully mature until age 26, so let's chill.

Does everyone on here expect every player to figure it all out and progress and become NBA caliber players with just coaching and talent? Have some patience. Everyone progresses at their own pace. This is a LOOOOOONG season and these kids are figuring it out. It's one thing to sit on the bench and learn from guys like Newton and Spencer and it's another thing to actually go and produce. If you remember throughout most of the 2022-23 season Newton wasn't playing great. He wasn't making great decisions he wasn't leading the team like a Point Guard should. It took him really until March to consistently put it all together. He was amazing obviously during the 23-24 season but don't forget that was his "COVID" season. He wouldn't have been around to put it all together if it wasn't for that year so let's give Ross, Stewart and Ball time to really develop. All of these guys are just scratching the surface of their talents.

I guess, look at how bad our D is. Now imagine how a guy like Ross might be carving it up from the second team in early practices. Might easily look more effective than he really is against a tough defense.

Unless everyone in the Boneyard is under the age of 26 you might have to rethink the age of maturation.
