Beard seems like a guy who doesn't get bogged down in prior commitments when he sees something better.

Accepted the Lamar State - Port Arthur job and resigned 6 days later for McMurray, where he stayed a year. Then 2 years at Angelo State, and a single season at Arkansas-Little Rock.

He accepted the UNLV job, but shifted to Texas Tech 19 days later. After 4 years, he signed a 6-year extension, and after these past two COVID-affected seasons switched to a Big 12 rival school.

Maybe it fits his personality that he'd just keep bringing in more and better players.

Very curious to see how Tre Mitchell does playing in a real conference. My UMass grad friend got offended when I said this to him the other day, I said, can you really compare playing Baylor, Oklahoma, and Kansas with Duquesne, Fordham, and LaSalle? He begrudgingly agreed.

Tre Mitchell only played in A-10 games last season, so yes, his stats need to be taken with a grain of salt. However, the A-10 is one of the best mid-major conferences.

Also, Tre Mitchell isn't playing 32 minutes/game next year with Dylan Disu (15p, 31.6 mpg) getting minutes at the 4 while Christian Bishop (11p, 23.4 mpg) and Disu will get minutes at the 5. Timmy Allen (35.1 mpg, ~17% minutes at the 4) also played some minutes at the 4 last season too.

I could see a team like Belmont, Oral Roberts or San Francisco behind Jamaree Bouyea spreading them out and punking them in the early rounds.

On the other hand Beard is going to create this culture that is contagious. Reilly is the best strength and conditioning coach in maybe ever in college hoops. So on the flip side they could behind great coaching and culture make the Final 4.

I still think if Matt Coleman returned with this roster they would have been much better. Yeah though they are real good. Should be interesting.

Yeah definitely a fair point that they might not gel next year but they’re one year transfers and guys who are prob thinking of going pro so regardless—ie no real downside for Beard

Very fair points.

Mitchell and Disu are both 37 3p% bigs so that space really helps open up lanes for the poor shooting, but athletic Marcus Carr and Timmy Allen. Ramey (41.4), Febres (39.2) and Jones (33.8) make it easy for Beard to play with at least three shooters on the floor at all times. Based on his 247 profile, incoming top-40 freshman Jaylon Tyson "can make shots from all three ranges.

I expect him Beard to never have any rotations that feature three of Bishop/Carr/Allen/Askew.

That's my concern also with University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) a true mid major. On paper...wow...in reality let's see. Kinda like Texas. The difference of course Chris Beard & Co.

That 16 second clip below is short but all about culture building. Beard uses Reilly all year long as arguably the most important part of his team. Many of these transfers have not won anything in college.

One thing to remember, when you have a bunch of new players who never have played together, no matter how talented they are, it almost never works out well. We'll see.

This concept of trying to fuse new players together, even superior talented players, does not always translate to success in dominating teams with players that have played together for a long time period.

We see this with team USA with its NBA top level players having trouble with national teams of lesser, mostly non-NBA caliber talent, but with more cohesion from playing together and knowing each other's moves.

Beard's transfer haul is not a long-term strategy of success, but he immediately rebuilt his foundation of five players into a team of twelve. Plus, three of his transfers will have multiple years of eligibility: Mitchell, Disu and Askew.

I don't think any of us are saying he shouldn't do it. We're just saying don't expect him to win big this season with that kind of roster. If he can keep them all together for a year they probably have a good chance to be really good the 2nd season. Who knows, maybe it will work out the first season.

What's huge for Texas is that they are bringing back Andrew Jones and Courtney Ramey, two senior guards who averaged a combined 26.8p, 7.7r, 6.2a and 32.9 mpg. Extra year returnee Jese Febres averaged 16.8 mpg and 39.2 3p% last year too.

It's very hard for teams to win titles without a gelled, veteran backcourt and Texas' backcourt returnees include one sixth-year senior (Jones), one fifth-year senior (Febres) and one fourth-year senior (Ramey).
