Skilled????? As I mentioned elsewhere, Griner's skill level is that she's 6'8'' and has a good amount of athleticism. She has worked on her game and now possesses some really nice inside moves and a substantially better shot. When she was a freshman, she had almost nothing going for her offensively. I would venture to say that 90% of her scoring in her freshman year came on layups off of passes from her teammates or offensive putbacks. I think when I hear people talk about her skill set they must be talking about someone else. Other than great coordination that allowed her to block shots from day 1 and a phenomenal amount of reach, where was her skillset????? She really has developed some offensive skills (which she should be credited for) but she has no skills offensively that would be on the same planet as Del Donne or Stewart and anyone of a number of players that have played in the WNBA or in the higher levels of WCBB.
Griner is a LOT more skilled than you give her credit for. She was by far the most skilled true post player in women's basketball this past season. Nobody came close. Griner is very good at establishing good position down low and is close to automatic when she shoots anywhere within 10 feet of the hoop. Her turn around jumper is impossible to defend at a high release point. She's also a very patient offensive player and doesn't force the issue--she doesn't take bad shots or make bad decisions. Additionally, she is a GREAT passer out of the double team. She averaged about 2.5 assists per game which is remarkable for a true center who is almost always camped out in the paint. Her blocking is more than just size and athleticism, it is great timing and the ability to avoid picking up fouls. Griner averaged fewer than 2 fouls per game while blocking more than 4 shots a game.
Griner doesn't have the well rounded skill set of EDD or Stewart, but it would be flat out dumb for her to work on her perimeter game. Griner should never leave the post. She is the most unique physical specimen who has played women's basketball. Offensively, Griner has been unstoppable the last three years of basketball when left one on one. Defensively, no one has ever been as dominant. Do you really think that EDD/Stewart are as skilled in the post as Griner?
I'll agree that as a frosh Griner was not polished offensively, but considering how much she has improved every season, it's scary to think how good she'll be 4-5 years down the road.
