The following appeared in a column in the Middletown Press this week.

MHS alum Dario Highsmith has been elected captain of his West Point Prep team by his teammates ... the Prepsters beat the West Point junior varsity 27-7 the other day and Highsmith threw a touchdown pass ... he’s the starting QB in the option offense.

Can someone explain the prep and JV team stuff?

Sounds like a minor league type set up.

The prep is Army Prep School. He probably had a few academic issues. Lots at guys accepted at zest Point (or Navy too) spend a year at one of the prep schools to adjust to military life and academic rigors. I think Army has also been using it as an unofficial redshirt system in recent years. Navy has done it for 10 years or more. They academies is also play a jv schedule with backups. I know some d2 and d3 and ivied do it too. Not sure about other d1 schools. Army Navy and Air For e all have their own prep schools.

Look at the Army West Point roster.

USMAPS show up on probably 80% of the guys. PLUS they get to have more than 85 on the roster. PLUS they have more than 9 coaches.

You (and other FBS schools) can have more than 85 players too.
