Because of huge importance that WCBB is accorded by the sports media, the ESPN poll on who will win the UConn - USCar matchup is still the featured poll for ESPNw a week and a half later. No reason to move on to any other subject when games versus #1 and #2 come along so infrequently, like previously since the last NC game.
But while the poll is still flying, it does let you see how the country voted state by state, with UConn winning the electoral vote with a huge blue presence vs. USCar's reddish garnet spots by 392-31, with a recount needed for Georgia's 15 ballots since the state split their 185 voters evenly at 92 for UConn, 92 for USCar, and one who was split down the middle, apparently by a falling tree limb as he pondered the choice. The popular vote was split 67%-33%.
Three of the four states who favored a USCar win were certainly understandable as South Carolina (home fans) went 83%-17% for USCar, Alabama (lack of good educational opportunities) went 58%-42% for the Cocks, and Tennessee (live in holes and hate UConn) went a fairly close 55%-45% for their new rivals. Reality and respect have sunk in for the other Southern states, as Mississippi gave 56% of the vote to UConn, Louisiana sent 62%, and the CT retirees in Florida pushed the Husky vote there to 76%.
For Homeland Security types, note that there are a bunch of Benedict Arnold traitors in Connecticut, as 26 voters in the Nutmeg State went for the Cocks, leaving CT's margin at only a second best 96%-4% for the Huskies. UConn's biggest supporters naturally are out in Nevada by a unanimous 100%-0%, as they appreciate all the big spending there by UConn fans in April after they vacation in Las Vegas with their pot of bracket pool winnings and their takes from hopeful but clueless Irish fans.
But one state stands out as a strange outlier, Montana, which went 59%-41% for the Cocks. The state does share a big border with a northern neighbor, so we could blame Canada even though Kia is doing well for the Huskies. And it's true that the sample size was only 17 votes, so we're talking about just 10 Ted Kaczynski Unabomber types here. But surrounding states like Idaho (76% for Huskies), South Dakota (60% UConn), Wyoming (56% UConn), and North Dakota (54% UConn) all stayed mainly sane and rational.
No idea what the reason for Montana's hostility toward UConn is. UConn has never played a Montana team, unlike with Idaho and the 105-37 rout in the 2013 Tourney opener. Could just be a small enclave of WCCB Unabomber-type fans hung up on stupid moves like Custer riding into Little Big Horn and wanting to make their state the Butte of jokes. Maybe they're just mad that no one from the state has ever been on Geno's squads, even though he's reached out as far as Alaska and the country you can see from there. Hopefully the people from the Big Sky region will start seeing Husky Blue soon.
