This is so sad it's funny. There are no wrong answers. So far we have:
1. The IG safety
2. The FG return
3. Giving up that long pass play at the end of the 1st half
4. The Pick 6
I'll add:
5. The sorry 3 and out after the turnover, settling for the FG
6. Punting late down 11 on a 4th and short
No. 6 by a wide, wide, wide, wide margin. He couldn't have sent a clearer message he was no longer playing to win if he took the microphone from Emily, walked to the middle of the field and asked everyone to drive home safely
Not setting the edge on Ross's runs.
That was the tell.
No matter how many times Maryland shot themselves in the foot, they would trample the D eventually. If you give up 20 yards on stretch plays consistently, there really is no drama left.
UConnwas leading 7-0 and you could see it was just a matter of time. The Terps shot themselves in the foot a few times but you could see the difference in speed and talent was just too obvious to compensate for over the long run.
Visiting fans (this year) have no excuse to be drunker than UConn fans. The pick 6. That was the moment when some drunk Maryland fan started spouting his mouth off to my wife and I. He wouldn't leave the standing area right behind our section and kept up the button pushing for a while. He then moved over a section and met up with a friend who joined in on trying to push my buttons (calling me a loser and mimicking my wife who threatened to call security on the guy who I told was getting dangerously close to getting knocked out if he tried touching me again). I lost my temper and ran over to the , got in his face and begged him to punch me first so I could fulfill my promise to him of knocking him out. He "turtled" very quickly and tried to shake my hands like we were buds. Probably because an army of angry UCONN fans came running in from all directions ready to punch the guys too. But after that all settled down and the Maryland fans were ushered out by security (without my wife's prompting), the game and season all grew incredibly discouraging. When drunk fans from MARYLAND (a program that I used to consider worse than UCONN a few years ago) begin coming into our stadium to talk and there is NOTHING I can do or say to fight on behalf of my team/school, that was an absolute low point. Hopefully the Michigan fans will be able to hold their liquor better than these Maryland fans.
Dooley the mistake you made was talking to them at all. Just call security as there is no reason for any fan to take that crap. Talking to them only encourages them.
I usually have a pretty thick skin at games. I don't mind it when opposing fans root like heck for their team...heck, I expect them to root hard for their team. But ignoring this guy was impossible. Our seats are the last row of 139 and this guy was hanging over the rail yelling right in my ear (I was standing). I sat down after the TD and he continued to hang over the rail and yell at my wife and I. If it was just me and my wife was home (this was the one game a year that she went to...lucky her!), I probably could have ignored him more. But he crossed the line when he started yelling at her. Not to mention, he was holding his beer fairly loosely over the rail and coming dangerously close to spilling it all over her and her friend's heads. He was truly a and a black eye for the Maryland fanbase.
The best part of the FG return was the hesitation at the goal line, when I was convinced he just put himself in position to get tackled at the two (when prior to the hesitation he had a chance at reaching the ten yard line before contact).
I don't get why he wasn't told "if they cover the potential return at all, let the ball hit the turf and we'll get it at their line of scrimmage". By catching it, the best we could hope for was a touchback, the worst, well,.........
He wasn't told because the coaching staff didn't think Maryland would cover....even after the TO.
I truly believe that you are correct, which is a huge indictment on the guy in charge.
