D1 Stadiums - Yale Bowl, Lane Stadium (VT), Husky Stadium (UW), The Swamp, The Rent, Beaver Stadium (PSU), and Tiger Stadium (LSU) about 50 times. I've seen college games at the Superdome (BSC NCG) and U of Phoenix Stadium (Fiesta Bowl).

LSU's gameday environment blows away any of the rest that I've experienced. Isn't even close.

West Virginia - great.
Virginia Tech - great.
NC State - okay if you don't mind drunken lunatics.
Maryland - meh.
Syracuse - Hey, they put a field in this parking garage!
Boston College - pretty nice.
Army - great.
Marist - Michigan of the Mid-Hudson.
I find it very difficult to believe that NC State had more drunks (or lunatics or drunken lunatics) than WVU or Va Tech.

Best fans: Nebraska and its not close. I've never been given so much steak, corn, and beer
Best stadium atmosphere: tie with Nebraska and Auburn.
Best stadium surroundings: Sun Bowl, carved into surrounding mountain.
Worst stadium: Memorial Stadium in Kansas. What a shithole Lawrence is, fans were awful.

Yale Bowl, Wildcat Stadium at U of AZ, ND stadium, Memorial stadium Storrs

Wildcat stadium was fun but hot as hell in September. U of A marching band is pretty good. Cheerleaders- topnotch.
Yale bowl is a storied place- and I had a hot girlfriend who lived across the street, so I liked hanging out there. Fun to imagine what the atmosphere must have been like in the heyday.
ND stadium is my favorite bowl attended so far. Would really love to see a game at any of the military academies.

In no particular order:

Division 1:

  • University of Michigan (Michigan Stadium): Had high expectations, but found it to be very overrated. Fans were really friendly.
  • Wisconsin (Camp Randall Stadium): Best in stadium atmosphere. Best student section. I would probably rank this as the best stadium I went to.
  • Ohio State (Ohio Stadium): I went there on a Thursday night on my way to the Michigan UCONN game. Stadium didn't fill up, crowd was so so. Still had a great time. Their band was fantastic.
  • LSU (Tiger Stadium): Went there on a Saturday night, they were facing Alabama. You could imagine the absolute energy. Probably my second favorite next to Camp Randall.
  • UCONN (Rentschler Field): Needs more in game atmosphere, but the tailgating rivals anywhere I have been so far (and as you can see I have been to some well known stadiums).
  • Boston College (Alumni Stadium): Been there quite a bit as a family member is an alum and I had several friends who attended. I usually go to one game there a year. By far the worst tailgating to any stadium I have been too, and I am including Division 3 schools. Don't dream of being able to get parking there, either.
  • University of Maryland (Byrd Stadium): I attended Maryland for two years, so I have seen plenty of games here. Try to catch one game there every other year. The stadium itself is very nice, but the atmosphere is blah. The tailgating is just a step above BC. One of the worst student sections in the country.
The Rest:
  • NESCAC SCHOOLS (Trinity, Wesleyan, Williams, Colby, Amherst): Love tailgating at these venues. A family member and several friends played football at NESCAC schools, I try to catch one game a year.
  • Yale Bowl: I get the nostalgia, but this place desperately needs an upgrade. Tailgating is top notch.

Michigan. We tail gaited in a lumberyard a block or so from the stadium. The outside of the stadium was recently renovated, they did a nice job matching the brick. It was hard to tell where the campus was in relation to the stadium. Inside was not very nice, and all I thought about was how few exits were available if an emergency occurred.
That is one thing I like about the Rent. I think the Ct fire dept would have a fit with all the people that were jammed into Michigan stadium that day. The fans were OK.
Sorry it was the only college campus we visited and I did not care for it.

We have been to all the bowl games except Detroit.

If the rent used the same seating ergonomics as Michigan it would seat over 50K

I hope the Rent doesn't as it was terribly uncomfortable on a hot day or any other day for that matter.

Other than the Rent, which is home. The best venues I have seen were all in the SEC. Neyland is amazing. Ole Miss, Alabama and Arkansas are all special.

Most overrated. FSU hands down.

Best in-stadium atmosphere: Wisconsin. Great town, great/friendly tailgating and a memorable game experience, all the way down to the band leading the entire stadium singing Varsity after the game.
Best weekend: Notre Dame, followed closely by Ohio State. They would win if their fans weren't so obnoxious.
Worst in-stadium atmosphere: Hands down Arizona State. Shamefully bad.

I was at the USC-Clemson game in Columbia last year. Probably best gameday environment I've been at.
I was at the CLEMSON - USC game in 2004 and was on the hill when the brawl broke out. That was intense and Death Valley is much better than Columbia for a gameday environment. The run down the hill is the best 10 seconds of football.

Also been to to Michigan, Notre Dame, Boston College, Florida (on campus, didn't attend a game), UVA, Vtech, Rutgers, WVU, Pittsburgh, Vanderbilt, Charlotte (we when played WF in MCCB), Indiana, Maryland, Penn State (sat in the Presidents box as I was on the "UConn Tradition Committee" in college), Minnesota, West Point.

Notre Dame - Great experience all around. Very welcoming and unbelievable campus. Worst taunt I heard was "isn't Yukon in Canada?"
Michigan - overrated. absolutely huge. Too huge.
Cincinnati - love the unique design and feel. Plus watching the band race at breakneck speeds down the stairs was awesome!
Eastern Michigan - like a high school field, but without working lights. or working stairs.
Ohio State - eh, marching band performance was amazing. but, in general, overrated like it's rival michigan. Also, an old woman threatened to beat me with her cane. Literally had to restrain my 90lb wife.

BC Army Florida Auburn Southern Miss Duke UNC Vandy

Auburn great experience (used to bum seats in student section) UF great game day experience but stadium I felt overrated and way too tight (have mentioned before) Southern Miss has an extremely annoying eagle screech after every first down.....those that hate the old PC Richards whistle would not be able to handle this...as for stadium most want to visit...not sure why but WVU for me

misc stadiums I didn't see listed: Nickerson (Braves Field) for BU, Vermont is another old rival that dropped football. Went to several ND-Navy games at JFK in Philly (where they had Live Aid concert). Saw UConn at Delaware in the rain, crowd impressively hung in...

Been to Texas, Michigan, ND, Buffalo, Syracuse, Penn State. DKR (University of Texas) was by far my favorite. Went to a game in late October and it was 90 degrees. Great food, great tailgate, and some of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. Austin is also a fantastic town, great music, lots of good bars, great food... and more of the most beautiful women I've ever seen.
