Got through season 1 of 1923 and it took us straight to 1883. I think we watched about half of the 1883 episodes then forgot about it. Both are pretty good. 1923 seems to obviously have a second season coming.
Both shows do a good job of trying to capture a time and place of significant change and transition. 1923 you've got the modern world, electricity, cars, refrigeration all coming to Montana. The town creating parking spaces and removing the horse hitching post stands out. Timothy Dalton is the bad guy, but he speech to Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) about what's coming is spot on.
1883 the civil war is over, immigrants are flooding in and moving west, yet the land is untamed. Smallpox, Indians, wildlife, weather, ruthless people present enormous challenges. It's a harsh, brutal life if you can survive it at all.
