We're Baaack: The Delicious Debate Resurfaces

Please remember that UConn had not won a championship in what nine years up until last year. Dawn and Kim won more than Geno. When UConn repeats in a couple of months then that is when we ask this question. Go UConn…
I believe, not know, that UConn had the best record in women's ball.

This was silly even during the glory years, three and four in a row! Right now it’s ridiculous! What have we done? We’ve won one championship and a decent number of consecutive games. I believe a number of teams have accomplished as much or more without this silly “bad for basketball” talk. At least have the decency to wait til we’ve done something exceptional. If we win this year and carry our unbeaten streak into 70+ territory, then perhaps people could say it without embarrassing themselves. Even then it would be a stretch though as we would still be behind two all time UConn streaks!

Bottom line though, UConn was never “bad for basketball” even during the four peat! They are simply raising the bar for everyone else and the end result will inevitably (sad for me and other UConn fans) end with a loss for UConn and an overall rise in the qualty of women’s basketball! (I am going to enjoy it while it lasts, however!😎)

If anything, UConn is the best thing that ever happened to WBB...UConn getting back to its rightful position at the mountain top is a great story by itself especially considering the parity in the game...even this season it will be no great surprise if UCLA, SC or TX will win the NC.
The most dominant team of the last 8 years or so is SC with 3 championships, 1 more final appearance and a covid year where they were considered the best team in the country. Did anyone ever claim they were bad for WBB?

Yeah! Let’s not forget, they have a banner that proves they were the best team during that covid year!🤣

.-.
Combining this topic with today’s game … I’ll tell you what was absolutely great for wcbb … the UConn TN rivalry from around 1995 to 2008. It was like Ali Frazier twice a year. The atmosphere at the games I was able to attend was as electric as any sporting event I’ve ever been to including a World Series game in Yankee Stadium etc. (never a championship game 7 or Super Bowl though).

The rivalry will never be what it was once but we can certainly celebrate what it was. And boy was it good for wcbb!

If that was before your time do yourself a favor and sometime go watch some of the TN games during the Taurasi era. Sports at it’s best.

The overlooked component of this question: UConn sets an example of what good basketball looks like. The usual sense of the question invites folks to conclude that UConn’s greatness is anti-competitive. Whether this has ever been true, they have always set a standard worth emulating.
Actually, this group there's a good job of pointing that out.

It's always interesting to hear people who aren't necessarily Connecticut fans talking about UConn. For example, they talk about what Shea Ralph is doing at Vanderbilt, as being overshadowed by Connecticut being undefeated. What they don't realize, apparently, is that Shea is one of ours and we celebrate her teams wins nearly as much as we celebrate our own.
