We're All Rooting For You, Jana!

Is Jana playing in any international competition with her national team over the summer ?
I don't believe so.. Saw her In a video posted in the "Summer Session" thread.

I'm still expecting big things from Jana. I think that we forget that last season was her first season against D-1 opponents and referees. Starting may have put more pressure on her than any of us know. To me, she was treated like Natalie Butler was treated. She came into UConn as the current Freshman of the Year. So everyone knew she could play. She tried her best but was also "foul prone" which made her constantly looking over her shoulder. Hopefully this fall with Sarah, Sareh and Ice all sharing time at the 5, Jana is going to settle in and play like she did in the Final Four but play this good for more minutes per game.
If she has even more help at the 5 spot, the better.
The sky is the limit.

I think Jana expected more from herself last year, so I believe she is in Storrs through the Summer to work on a number of things: reaction time in switching defense, timing in blocking shots, reading and reacting in offense......she probably will also work on better control of her body. Should she improve in those things, she will be a real problem for the opposition......we may see the changes gradually but I expect to be agape watching Jana do things by the end of the season.

When I compare Jana to the top bigs in the country, what I see is rough skills but excellent mobility. She’s as big and strong as Beers, for example, and as immovable when setting screens, and though her offense isn’t nearly as good and she sometimes fumbles away rebounds, she can drive the lane much better. Also, she’s not guard-quick, but she runs the court much better than Beers or Betts.

Geno encourages his bigs to practice rim-runs, and Sarah is the best at this in the entire country. I expect Serah to be pretty good at it too. And from the high school videos I’ve seen, Gandy can really motor up and down the court. And our troop of 6’2” forwards can all run the court — Ayanna Carol Morgan and Blanca. Jana and Ice aren’t nearly as quick, but I suspect they’ll be working on this over the summer along with the rest of their offensive skills. There’s no way Beers or Betts could regularly run the floor in transition in an actual game. Geno doesn’t want to slow down the style of play when the bigs are on the floor. If you don’t have the speed and stamina to get out in transition, you’re not as useful to the team.

Also, isn’t it stunning to think about how big the frontcourt will be next season? 9 kids who are 6’2” or taller — Gandy Jana Serah Ice Sarah Ayanna Blanca Morgan and Carol. That is a really tall roster.

needs to get quicker. and keep her arms up at her shoulders. needs a go-to post move.
would like 9 ppg, 9rpg, 2 bpg

Four wishes. All doable imo.

1. Improve FT percentage.
2. Dramatically decrease missed layups.
3. Cut down fouling.
4. Make her low post moves quicker to avoid double teams.

The team needed her 10 to 15 minutes a game last year. Geno has other options next season if her progress slows.

I find it unlikely Ice will see time at the five with three centers on the roster. Her natural position is the four.

Would be a game changer, if she could also develop a consistent mid-range jump shot.

She has some of those. One of Jana's biggest problems was her teammates feeding her the ball with bounce passes instead of high passes. Look at some of her videos before she came to UConn. The moves are there. She has a mid-range and three-point shot. I believe she will get to use them in the coming season. The guards need to feed her like they feed Sarah. They need to do the same for Serah or she won't be the player we know she can be.

Need that crossover dribble against South Carolina too!
I watched that crossover a number of times and slowed it down. Looks like it was an unintentional thing which happened when she momentarily lost control of her dribble. I might be wrong, but regardless, it left her defender's shorts on the floor!

It did look a bit precarious. But I don’t think it was unintentional. It just wasn’t a ‘tight’ move… yet. She did a similar move against Betts, not a crossover, but a straight fake-and-drive from the top of the key. It’s part of her way of thinking about her game. She did stuff like that regularly in high school.

Geno and CD have said many times, over and over, it takes a couple of years for big posts to adjust to tehpace and size of D1 competition. And UConn plays at the highest level.

Big post players coming out of high school usually have no competition of another post player of comparativfe size so the have their way. Then comes college. UConn has a very good history of developing bigs - Tina Charles, Steph Dolson, Kara Walters and others.

Objectively, Jana grew as a player this past season. We caught glimpses all season. She will continue to grow. She is a big, mobile post player that will give the opposition fits.

I'm defiantly rooting for Jana!!!!!!!!
