I have not seen a worst first half of basketball by both teams ever. The facts, two top twenty teams, score at half was 16-16, neither team made a single basket that was not a layup or foul shot. The second half was not much better. Duke did not score in the first 8 minutes of the third quarter. They were still sitting at 16 points, UNC had double their first half output to lead 32-16. From there Duke out scored UNC 24-8 to tie the game at 40-40. The game went into OT and UNC won 53-46. Duke shot 23% from the floor, they made 4-17 from three, all in second half and OT, they also had 19 turnovers.
UNC made two threes in the second half 2-8 for the game. They turned the ball over 26 times, yes 26 times and still won. Alysa U. for UNC had a triple double, 10 points, 12 rebounds and yes 11 turnovers!

I am a long time UConn fan who went to high school in Storrs in the 60’s. I now live in Chapel Hill and have two daughters who graduated from UNC. So I go to a few games as one of my daughters has UNC season tickets. Also saw UNC/ND last week.

ND was impressive but UNC and Duke are not very good.

Since you have watched UNC in person more than once, why do you think that they often struggle to score?

Usually it's just one team that has a REALLY bad shooting night. Being it was both made it unbearable. I wouldn't retraumatize my team by making them watch the game.

In fairness, our All-American post Jayne Appel broke her foot in the final four game and was literally hobbling down the court in the final minutes. I can't speak for what was up with UConn, but she scored 40+ points multiple tournament games in a row before the injury and went 0-12 in that championship game. Talk about the one that got away....

That was probably the ugliest championship game ever. Appel was clearly hurting and I felt for her.

I remember that game. It was awful to watch - embarrassing for women's basketball. Jane Appel was 0fer - she was playing on a stress fracture though.

Stanford started the game 11-57 from the floor, a paltry 19%. It wasn't until the game was effectively over (down 15 with under 4 minutes left, having scored just 29 points at that point) that the lid finally came off and they finished shooting 7/11 in the last 4 minutes to close the gap.

Me and my family came over to watch the game. They busted out laughing during this game, mainly because of how bad a game it was for the most part.

Never did I expect a ranked Duke and UNC to be 16-16 at the half, and for Duke to not score a single bucket in the third quarter until the last 50 seconds, where they scored back to back to back 3’s.

Any box score watchers would think UNC and Duke had an okay 3rd quarter, but the fact Duke finally scored in the final minute was almost hilarious. They could’ve had so many points but Fournier must’ve insulted the backboard in some horrible way because it would not let her shot go in for anything.:confused: If she had even made half her shots in the 3rd, it would’ve been an interesting quarter.

And overall, the game was a disaster. A player would steal and go for a layup, only for it to bounce off the bottom of the backboard. They would airball jumpshots, even a free throw at one point. The first half was nearly unwatchable.

My family kept saying “this game will set women’s sports back months.”

I chalked it up to UNC's posts getting her out of sync. Blanca (Bianca?) Thomas was an unsung hero during the game in my opinion. Her strength and ability to block or tie Fournier up was impressive. Sure, wide open shots should have gone down, but when you've been shook, it's hard to get back into rhythm.
