Travel Team USA Co-Goaltender of the Week
Matt Grogan - UConn
Senior; Goaltender; Gilbert, Ariz.
Grogan finished the week 1-1, making 89 saves, posting a 2.02 goals against and a .957 save percentage. Grogan turned in a record breaking performance on Tuesday night to come away with a 3-2 upset win over #9 Providence. Grogan turned away 58 of 60 shots to lead the Huskies to a 3-2 win over the Friars, the program’s first-ever win over a nationally ranked top-10 team. Grogan set a new UConn Division I record (1998-present) with his 58 saves and tied for the second most all-time in program history. On Friday night, Grogan made 31 saves but the Husky offense struggled in a 3-1 loss to Holy Cross. On the season, Grogan has 10 wins, a 2.39 goals against average and a .926 save percentage.
In addition,
Billy Latta – UConn (Senior; Forward; West Chester, Pa.) — Latta had a goal and an assist in helping lead the Huskies to a 2-1 week including an upset of #9 ranked Providence College. Latta scored the game-winning goal, his third of the season, in the third period to lead UConn to a 3-2 win over the 9th ranked Friars. Latta created a turnover just outside the Providence zone, creating a break-away chance. Latta drove the net hard and beat Jon Gillies with a back-hander for his team-leading 11th goal of the year. In Saturday’s 5-0 win at Holy Cross, Latta notched his team-leading 13th power play point this season. Latta set up teammate Jacob Poe on the left win for a power play goal 45 seconds into the 2nd period for a 3-0 lead. Latta now has seven goals and six assists on the power play this season.
Robby Nichols – UConn (Freshman; Goaltender; Dallas, Texas) — Nichols got the call to start Saturday night’s match-up at Holy Cross and the rookie netminder answered with his second shutout of the season. Nichols stopped all 38 shots he faced Saturday night to lead the Huskies to a 5-0 win over the Crusaders, taking the season series with Holy Cross, 2-1. Nichols made 15 of his 38 saves in the first period as the Huskies opened a 2-0 lead en route to the shutout win. For his efforts, Nichols was awarded the Holy Cross Winter Homecoming MVP Trophy. Nichols improved his record to 6-1-2 on the season. He owns a 1.77 goals against and .944 save percentage in 10 appearances.
It will be interesting to see which goaltender gets the most of the starts coming down the stretch.
