Looks like Iowa St fell out of the top 25. I guess that’s one less game against a ranked team for UConn.

On the other hand, Tennessee is now ranked #18, so what we lose out the door comes in through the window.

NC State is fortunate to be in the top 25. Anyone who watched their game against Davidson knows that they should have lost that game.

Switching gears, if Abin Joseph was an AP voter it is suspected that we might have fallen several more spots in the rankings. After the loss to ND he wrote two anti- UConn articles for Essentially Sports, one skewering Page and one skewering Geno and UConn in general, while praising Hidalgo. Funny, I don’t recall similar treatment for ND after their back to back losses. I take his articles with a grain of salt. I question his sports knowledge when he identifies this season as the 2023-2024 season

At this point, I think there is drop off between team #7 and team #8.
There is also a small difference in the points from 4-7, so Uconn is almost as close to 7 as to 3.

I'm not clear what you mean. Uconn is 37 votes above #7 USC and 48 below #3. Is that the numbers you meant?

It's what I expected.

Still a long way to go.

I think UConn still has to find their identity as a team. Listening to Geno it sounds like he wants to go small but in my opinion he should go big. He has two great guards that are good sized, one good sized forward in Sarah and then the rest are about the same in talent (they are all above average). So whatever he picks will have some players in place but also a couple that need court time so why not give the time to those who give you the greatest benefit in the end?

Jana is a load but needs tons of court time. Geno absolutely can't take her out when she makes a mistake. If he does she will never develop to the level they will need for number 12. Ice is capable but I don't see her playing at the level she should play at. She has bursts here and there but she needs to go full tilt for about 30 minutes a night to take UConn to a level above the rest.

I thought ND was the best team in the country early on and if you try to beat them at their game I just don't see the matchups that favor UConn.

No problem with UCONNdropping to #4. But there is an inconsistency with the rankings.
Most of the top 10 teams play gruelling non- conference schedules & losses affect their ranking. But LSU once again doesn't play a non-conference game vs. a top 30 team & they are rewarded with a top 5 ranking.
Mulkey's excuse every season is that the SEC is so tough & the conference games excuse her soft non-conference schedule. But SEC members South Carolina & Texas play strong non- conference schedules & they were penalized for losses.

Essentially Sports is one of a number of online only sports pages that specialize in “clickbait.” Others are Sportskeeda, Athlon Sports and the once venerable Sports Illustrated, to name a few. The article on Geno was titled, “Calls Mount on Geno Auriemma to Retire.” It came out shortly after the ND game. If you felt compelled to click on the article, what you read was a lengthy discussion of the ND game along with a supplemental discussion of Geno’s long and successful career at UConn.

The title of the article was based on a single social media post by someone using a screen name, suggesting that Geno should retire, along with a poll asking readers to vote on whether or not Geno should retire.

The bullshit that passes as journalism is stunning. :(

I'm not an apologist for LSU's scheduling tendencies or their ranking, but they do have a win over NC State

NC State dropped out of the top 20 this week after squeaking by 3-7 Davidson. They already have 3 losses!
But you are correct. NC State is LSU's highest ranked non- conference ooponent
Your post made reference to the top 30, not top 20.

And NC State dropped out of the top 20 because of their earlier losses to TCU (unranked at the time) and LSU. They were unranked when they beat Ole Miss on Dec. 5, and #22 when they played Davidson a week later.

I believe those aren't votes, but points. I'm not totally sure, but there are votes for #1,2,3,4 and so on. Pretty sure, but maybe someone knows for sure.

This is a "how they voted" for football. If they vote a team a #1 it gets 26 (or 25) so I guess they are points driven by votes or something. They don't create one for women's basketball despite my badgering.

So I don't know what to call the # that is generated.

Texas doesn't have that strong of a non-conference schedule. They had to play ND because of the ACC-$EC challenge.... WVU in a holiday tournament. I give them credit for visiting James Madison and Richmond.

25 pts for #1 votes, 24 pts for #2 votes and on down. 32 voters in the polls. Add up the points and the school with the most points is #1. 800 pts (25x32) maximum if a school receives #1 votes from all 32 writers in the poll. UCLA received thirty #1 votes and two #2 votes for a 798 point total.

Sad but true. I actually challenge people to read these articles to me as when they try to claim they know something about the WNBA. Especially from the Facebook links.

What I notice is that most base their opinions solely on the headline and never read the "article". When they start to read what's "written" they get sheepish because they realize the stories are constructed poorly by pulling quotes from other articles.

Another article today in Essentially Sports suggests that Arike Ogunbowle had “humbled” Paige after the recent UConn -ND game. Ogunbowle was at the game and it appears that afterwards she and Paige hugged each other and talked for a few minutes. On that point, I would certainly commend Arike, particularly if she hopes to be playing with Paige in the W.

But the clickbait title appears to be based on one minor, perhaps nonexistent comment that was uttered by Arike to Paige of, “Good win, almost.” How Essentially Sports would possibly know what was said between the two individuals during a brief courtside encounter is never mentioned.

Unfortunately, these idiotic articles having to do with UConn WBB continue to show up in my news feed, because of my long established proclivity to follow UConn WBB.

They along with Athlon show up on my feeds for the same reason. Essentially Sports takes this approach with any team they can get engagement on. They like to leverage the ND angle too like the Seattle coaching investigation where they focused on Diggins primarily.

Not surprised they wrote an "article" on Arike and Paige talking. They got to irk two fanbases with one article.

I wonder if a relatively new BYer read this same article and then decided to start a thread about Geno's "vision"????
Because, IMO, the thread was bs too.
