Week 4 - Nov 24-30

Yeah, Tennessee is right behind Duke as far as I'm concerned. A lot of noise in the off season/pre season, not impressed with either so far. And I still am not slightly convinced that this isn't more of the same. There will never be another Pat, and the difference between Warlick, Harper and Caldwell is hard for me to discern.

Oof, another horribly lopsided game. Illinois over LeMoyne 100-28. Illini scored 36 in Q1. They literally could've held the ball every possession and not scored for the rest of the game...and still won. By quarter LeMoyne scored 6, 9, 4 and 9.

.-.
I think Coach Caldwell has to go back to the drawing board. Her ‘defense’ isn’t working well and she doesn’t have an offense.
Seriously. The wildest stats from the box score is that UCLA had more than twice the steals (13 to 5) and Tennessee had almost twice the turnovers (20 to 12). If your signature defensive strategy is to press and cause chaos you should not be on the losing end of the steals and turnovers battle. Yikes!

Dugalic as one of the main press breakers was interesting. She’s got good handles. Betts was okay this game and she’s had many dominant games in her career at UCLA. But I can’t help thinking the team is better when Dugalic subs in for her.

Also, Leger-Walker looked really good, a pure PG, more so than Rice. And it’s not like Rice had a bad game either. I can’t help picturing a starting 5 of Dugalic Rice Leger-Walker Jaquez and Kneepkens, with Betts as 6th woman.

Fairfield has scheduled themselves some challenging games, although they've come up short against North Carolina and Iowa. They won't be seeing teams like that in conference games. Heiden came up big, and any time you can get 4 3 pointers each from McCabe and Feuerbach that really helps Iowa's cause.
Fairfield made 18 3's against Iowa, including 6 in the 1st qtr and 8 in the 4th. You don't want to draw them in the 1st round of the NCAA's; really scrappy team.

Can't believe Close looked shocked. What was she expecting?
Uh, I don't know, professionalism? Honestly, only in today's era would a player like Barker show such little class. Folks around here know I have mixed views of Cori, but on the player treatment aspect of things, she is top tier. UCLA didn't recruit Barker last season, she came of her own accord. It is well known that Close warned her there were no playing time guarantees if she came. When she did play, it was clear she was not following UCLA's offensive script, and would jack up shots without ever looking to pass the ball. Barker also wasn't "recruited over," because UCLA's current freshman class had been targeted long before Barker reached out to UCLA. And Barker's probably making more NIL money at Tennessee this season anyway.

So suck it up, shake your former coach's hand, and show you're ready to be an adult when you graduate in five months. Oy vei.

98 point win. I know Niagara isn't good (0-7) but I feel like we're seen more insane margins of victory this season in early season games.

LSU has won games by 89 and 77, Michigan with a 70 point win too. Probably many others I'm missing.
Illinois won 100-28 today against LeMoyne today. We can mark off a 72 point victory from the list. 😉

Not Barker’s UCLA stats missing from her player profile lol

Thank you for Barker's back story. The only thing I know about her was how she played and what I saw during the National Semi-final (that I have watched over a half dozen times). She seemed to be very frustrated and not at all happy during the game. I mean she looked really p!ssed at Close to me. I was not surprised at all when she entered the portal. That's why I was not at all surprised by her post game behavior today.
But I agree with you about how she should have acted.

Agree about Dugalic. She also had a few nice moves in the low post as well. I didn't watch the whole UCLA Duke game when Betts had to sit, but I think in general, the UCLA offense runs better when they are not going through her in the low post. I think it was necessary last year, but they have better guards this year and teams have also scouted Betts to a T and she (and her coach) hasn't really changed her game to compensate

And during the gsme the announcers said “Cori thought Janiah was a great fit for Cladwells system and was happy for her.”

Not saying Close was being sincere (or not) but at least she was saying the right things.
