Week 3

There was a major "throw out the record books" game earlier today. No telling what will happen when Maryland Eastern Shore and UMBC clash on the hardwood! Eastern Shore got the 68-54 win. Does that mean they own the state now? Or maybe there's some other school in Maryland.
There are a few of other schools in Maryland that play Division 1. ;) That would be Towson , Coppin State, Morgan State, Loyola Maryland, Mount St, Mary's and Navy according to the Google Machine. Of course the "gorilla" is the the flagship, University of Maryland.

St. John's pulls off the upset, 74-67

Still no Ladine for Washington. Still crickets for anything official. During the first game one of the commentators said she was "day to day." That was 2 1/2 weeks ago. Starting to wonder if we'll ever see her this season. What gives?

Cruising to an easy win against Fresno St., but apparently decided not to really bother with the 4th quarter.

No Gibb for BYU. Anybody know about that? Cougs escape w/ a 1 point win against the Grizz in Missoula.

Britt Prince w/ a 30 point game for Nebraska against Oral Roberts.
Looking forward to seeing her play during conference play this season. She seems to be under the radar right now with a lot of the national attention going to other guards in the BIG10 currently.

NC State defeated Coastal Carolina at home, 71-58. Coastal got to single digits multiple times in the second half but it seemed like State would answer with a 3 every time.
Yep. State led by 20+ at the half and I thought played decently well. Good energy on defense in that first half and really moved the ball well. You could tell ball movement and spacing had been emphasized because at the break Maddie Cox was the leading scorer with 11. She was great knocking down open jumpers and shooting with confidence. Her best offensive game of her career.

The second half was a total different story. They reverted back to 1 on 1 too much, Zoe and Pierre are probably the biggest culprits. My theory is the game was well in hand and maybe players were focused on individual scoring a little too much (Zoe, Zam and Pierrre all had 4 points at half) - I kinda think they maybe were trying to get theirs in a blow out game and it resulted in bad shots and poor offense and Coastal had a girl get smoking hot from outside (I think she made 4 3's in the 3rd quarter).

State was without Tilda Trygger who was poked in the eye during practice, which made a starter out of Maddie Cox.

It's a young team, very young. And a couple of the veterans (Pierre and Samuels) are brand new to the program and trying to find their way and adjust. Pierre needs to learn to pass more when she gets doubled, at times she tries to do too much. Maybe she had to at Vandy, that isn't the case here. The points will come if her and Zoe make the right play and find the open team mate. Once the defense has to respect others, they will feast. Right now I think it's a young team trying to learn how to play together. I think they will be fine in the long run, but a very imperfect team at the moment. Hard to believe it's the same team that beat Tennessee and had their way with USC for 36 minutes.

She had a good freshman year but sort of gets lost in the shuffle with Huskers being "almost" good. However, if she pops in 20/game in Big Ten play peeps will notice. Big recruiting swing and a miss for my regional Cyclones, she was a perfect fit for our system.

I was wondering why Tilda Trygger was in street clothes...I missed the beginning of the game.

I see that LSU is taking on the juggernaut of Alcorn State today. I wonder if Kim might want to beef up her schedule by adding some of the high school teams from Baton Rouge.
Look, no one who knows me will confuse me for a Kim Mulkey fan. She is most definitely not my cup of tea. However, since 2008, Kim's teams have won 2 national championships, 1 Final Four, 8 Elite Eights, and 3 Sweet Sixteens. Her worst performance was her first year at LSU, where they made the second round.

Folks love to rag on her cupcake OOC scheduling, but for better her worse, she gets her teams ready by March at almost equal measure to Geno. At a certain point, gotta just defer to her on this one. Her formula works, year in, year out.

Texas Tech favored by 4.5 at home against Mississippi State. Should be a good measuring stick for them. They seem legit better this year.

Florida favored by 2 at home against Florida State. I assume McGill is playing; she missed the Navy loss.

Who woulda thought Northern Iowa vs. Creighton would pit teams w/ records of 0-3 and 1-2 against each other? Most years this would be a good match up.

Also Gonzaga @ South Dakota St. normally would be a real nice mid major battle, but I won't be surprised to see SDSU win this one handily.

WV sets the low bar for the night -- "only" winning by 29.

Will any ranked team come in lower? MD already won by 40+ and MichSt, IowaSt, UNC, and Tenn are up by 30.
LSU and TCU up early and on their way.

Ball St. beat Cincinnati 83-63. I though Cincy had been recruiting well recently, but they are off to a 1-4 start.

Creighton lost to previously winless Northern Iowa 51-50.

Bad loss for Creighton. They gave Northern Iowa their first win of the season. They only managed 18 points in the second half. I watched a little of the first half when they were doing well and I thought every shot was a 3. That probably continued in the second half too.

.-.
Haven’t watched a lot of Baylor. But they look really poor so far. Maybe Iowa is making them look poor?
