I did not go to the Syracuse game tonight, as I of course had to stay home for UConn’s historic game. But wow. Lost to U Albany by 3 at (almost) the buzzer. This is another L in the “should have been a W” column. Not good for Syracuse. They are not the same team without Fair.

Well.....Jscks open the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 10 point lead

Barnes calls the time out....I suspect she will unleash the dogs of war!

We might need to start doing some relegation in the ACC. Syracuse drops to the America East,,,, Wake to the SOCON
Don’t quite know what Syracuse’s deal is this season.

They don’t look awful on the court. Maybe a bit discombobulated at times, but not anything awful. They are capable of making good plays and have some great shooters.

But then you look at the losses to St. Joe’s — and now Albany — and suddenly one is reminded of all the games from last season where they struggled with a lot of ice cold starts and/or closing out games. Seems that now, without Fair, the flaws are more obvious. I guess.

They better get it together or they are going to find themselves in the ACC’s basement.

LSU's lead over Tulane down to 9 in the 4th quarter. They have had a couple of uninspiring performances recently.

Earlier this season I took a peek at Iowa State on a game that was airing on ESPN+ and I was left wondering why they were ranked #8 because they didn't look like a top 10 team in athleticism, speed or size. Every shot by Crooks looked like she was tossing the ball at the basket without any technique. I didn't think they would lose to a team like NIU but I had a feeling they'd not last as a top 10 team and probably not last as a top 25 team either.

Now down 10 !!
Unless you're from Iowa you don't realize how difficult these games are vs Drake and Northern Iowa. Iowa, Iowa State, Drake and UNI all play each other every year on a home and home basis. Drake and Northern Iowa rosters are full of Iowa natives who weren't recruited by the P4 teams, yet played against their players in high school...often on an even basis. They (Drake and UNI) are neither intimidated nor lacking in confidence vs Iowa and Iowa State...they expect to win. These games are always like playing against a Big 10 or Big 12 opponent.

100%. It deserves its own conference name. Really these competitive in-state match ups.

In addition to the in-state rivalry stuff, it's also that the teams at the top of the Missouri Valley are very good. Not top 10 good, but like "solidly middle of the pack in any given power conference" good. Definitely able to upset anyone outside of like UConn/SoCar/etc on any given night, especially at home. Look at Ohio State struggling at Belmont recently, or Drake taking Kansas State and Louisville down to the wire in the last two NCAA tournaments.

Iowa State losing is pretty shocking to me. I agree with all the above comments providing context for the rivalry aspect of the games. However the fact remains that a women’s top 10 team getting upset by an unranked, under-the-radar mid major is still really unexpected.

I did a double take seeing the score, thinking it was men’s.

Spot on. As Bill Fennelly noted post-game, the P4 men’s teams in Iowa won’t play UNI and Drake, especially on the road:

UNI is always good, and they won last night without their post player, who is sidelined for the season with an ACL tear. I like both those teams, so I just settled in and enjoyed a terrific exhibition of basketball. At some point in the second half, UNI hit one of those magical streaks where everything they did worked for them, and ISU couldn't buy a break. Before you knew it, the underdog was up 15 and wasn't about to wilt down the stretch. Hats off to the McDermott kid, easily the smallest player on the floor. She was unstoppable and scored 37. Crooks had a bad night. I doubt we'll see very many of those.

ETA: I just took a look at the box score and realized it wasn't fair to say Crooks had a bad night. She scored 22 and had 10 rebounds. It's just that she never really dominated the way she so often does.

Oregon escapes a close one against Auburn. 70-68 final score.
I watched a lot of the second half. I was pretty high on Oregon as far as their freshman and what they did in the transfer portal. They have played ok to start the season. I'm still not quite sure who their best 5 is, if I completely trust Deja to be efficient and if Graves is doing the right thing by not playing their freshman much. But I do still like their overall collection of talent and PK is starting to get healthy. Their occ schedule is pretty good.

On another note, can Arizona's loss be attributed to no Jada Williams or are they just not very good this year.
