Week 16 - Feb 17 to 23

Morrow really shoots LSU out the game too often
I'm really shocked Mulkey/LSU has not addressed her wild shot selection. She seems adamant anything the ball is passed to her that she HAS to shoot, even if it means throwing up a shot with 2/3 defenders on her. As a result her efficiency the last 2-3 weeks has tanked significantly. Its actually hurting the team a bit tbh

That LSU coach, who can't coach, must have given a pretty good halftime speech.

Flaujae really woke up on both O and D in q3. Williams picked up scoring and the close out in Q4. Those 2 made up for Morrow's poor shooting. LSU scrapes by yet again.

Kentucky still has Tenn and SC to finish out.

UCLA comes back to get a hard fought win 67-65 vs Iowa today. Another game where the referees were way below average going BOTH ways. Tough to see this foul call with 3.8 seconds left in a 65-all tie. Dugalic sets a "screen" tripping Lucy Olsen, who falls on UCLA's Aarnisalo, earning a "blocking" foul. 2 free throws later, game over. Oh well.....

Does appear Dugalic's legs only "slightly wider" than vertical plane of her body.

I really like Olson, but she was 5 for 21 today, and of course still fighting down the stretch.

Iowa had 'em on the ropes and that home crowd really helps. 2nd half team shooting just kept them one possession short.

I like the way the team of Stuelke, O'Grady and Affolder defended Betts. UConn could follow that model if they match up.

That LSU coach, who can't coach,
Who is saying this?

Most people's gripes with Mulkey are centered around her personality (she's repugnant and I do not like her one bit) and her inability/unwillingness to develop her players for the WNBA (the ones that need developing), but 99% of WBB fans would agree that the woman can coach. You don't win four national championships by chance.

And poor Kentucky must have the worst last 3 regular season games ever (I realize that this swerves into the upcoming Week 17 thread):
LSU, TN and SoCar.
They're the underdogs in each game.

After a season during which her time was limited ( especially first half) due to lingering injuries, Philly Kyei seems to be rounding into play off form for Oregon. 20 points and 25 rebounds with 3 assists last night v. Rutgers.

Good for her. A late bloomer who has continued to persist and get better. She's had her bad luck with injuries and outside circumstances limiting the time she had to develop.

COVID took away her senior season, which was going to be at Crestwood. Unfortunate too, as that was going to be a good season of competition before heading to Oregon.

You didn't say against what team they were playing. Rutgers, who has only 2 wins in the Big 10, 9-18, 2-14 Purdue and 10-17, 1-15 Penn State. Rutgers should win their final game of the season, they play Penn State at home.

Interesting that today on my YouTube feed the ACC Digital Network posted a highlight video of the Notre Dame loss at NC State...of ND's Hannah Hildago

POY candidate. Conferences can do a soft lobby to get consideration for its players. Check out the multitude of Paige articles on the Big East site

"You didn't say against what team they were playing."
Actually I did say Rutgers. Small matter but announcer claimed Rutgers was 2nd in conference in O Boards going into game. So... with Oregon getting notoriously out rebounded in Big Ten this season... 25 boards is still an accomplishment. Apparently a Big 10 WBB record.

"The Big Ten Women's Basketball single-game rebounding record is 25 rebounds, set by Phillipina Kyei of Oregon against Rutgers on February 23, 2025.

Here's a breakdown:

  • Player: Phillipina Kyei (Oregon)
  • Opponent: Rutgers
  • Date: February 23, 2025
  • Rebounds: 25
  • Points: 20
