It might not be a donation. Notice the wording, "will support."

Additionally, Webster will support UConn youth and community relations programs as well as the new 70,000-square-foot UConn Basketball Development Center to be built on the current Memorial Stadium site adjacent to Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.

It may be an interest free loan or other financial instrument to facilitate the building of the practice facility.

So does this mean People's Bank was shown the door? Great news though.

The Peoples Bank 10 year deal which was signed in 2002 was worth about $10 million . Hopefully this new deal is for more $$.

My brother is pretty high up in Webster and he told me that you are going to see Webster Bank's name plastered all over the UCONN campus. It seems to be a huge financial investment.

“Webster Bank’s fully integrated sponsorship of the Huskies is a smart and comprehensive approach, aligning the bank with one of the most passionate fan bases in sports. It adds up to the largest local sponsorship at any IMG College property.”

This implies it's a better deal.

I just opened up a new account with People's; haven't received my debit card in the mail, but they told me it would have the Huskies' logo. Looks like I got in just in time.

The Hartford Courant reported today that UConn has 90% of the monies needed to start the building process. The estimated amount of the project is now 40MM, they need 30MM to start leaving 3MM in order to begin.

Actually, according to Manuel, 30 mil is needed to start. 36 mil has been raised. So, they can start now. Manuel has said the next big donation will put them at 40 Mil. We should have that in time for completed construction, which should be in 2 years. Hopefully construction starts early in the fall.
Not too many banks, in the Northeast, would give this kind of support to old state U. Or, any U, big or small. What this tells me is our friends at PC, UMess, and bcu will be wrong in calling for UConn's big time status to end after sanctions, the APR situation, and Calhoun's eventual retirement. Money talks, and with this money, UConn will find ways to continue winning no matter who's coaching.
Now, let's see these other complaining northeastern institutions keep up, with us in on, and off, the court/field.

"Any gift we get pushes that," athletic director Warde Manuel said. "This is significant, let's put it that way. …. The facility is a top priority for me, and we will build it. … I'd like to put a shovel in the ground tomorrow."
The facility will cost an estimated $40 million. Before UConn can break ground, it must raise 75 percent of the construction costs. School officials say they have about 90 percent of the total needed to break ground and hope their next significant gift will put them over that line. - Hartford Courant, yesterday.

agree and prefer your source, hope this starts asap

Yonick,

When did Warde M. ssay anything like that. The Courant is speculating the cost of the building will be in the 40mm range. We are not even close to having raised 25mm let alone 36mm.

The August 8th BOT meeting might give an indication as where the BB practice facility stands. If the facility is on the construction agenda they might be ready to put a shovel in the ground. The BOT agenda should be posted online next week.

Could well be Webster's support is designed in the form of certain guaranteed advertising, either to be prepaid or scheduled along with construction needs. But does anyone really care about advertising appearing in the practice facility??? No, including Webster Bank.

I imagine we'll see a much more noticeable Webster support evidence during the next years.

This is the way Manual was quoted in Friday's Courant. He stated that they need 75% of the 40 mil to start (30mil) and they've raised 90% (36 mil). Perhaps it's a misquote, or Webster has given over 15 mil. Financial terms were not disclosed, but if Manual's quote was accurate, Webster gave around 15 mil.

Hmmnnn, it's only a guess, but I would interpret Manual's recitation as meaning that, "they've raised 90% ...", as $27 mm has been raised of the required 30 mil needed to commence digging. But whatever the translation, we're apparently getting close!

If the practice facility reality is close to fruition, it's construction would give a great boost to recruiting coming off the 2012/2013 year.

We'll probably need the added attraction for our recruiting efforts following this year's NCAA penalties to us.

I took it to meant that they have 90% of the 30 mil start up amount.
