Hopefully we will sink a little lower on this list this year.

Haha! Nothing confirms offensive impotence (or a reluctance to gamble on 4th down) like that list.

Our luck, we’d get seeded 3rd behind iowa

Ironically, several teams there were bowl eligible.

Interesting list in that there are a couple schools on the list who have aggressive offenses. Like OSU and UCF. They aren't on the list because they do run, run, pass punt. They are probably on the list because they don't worry about ball control. What edsall used to complain about Lashlee.

So...being on that list isn't always a bad thing (but it usually is...lol.)

I'm too lazy to look it up but if those numbers were adjusted by some percentage to take into account fumbles lost and ints (eliminating potential punt "opportunities") we were probably number 1. At times it felt like we punted 80 times a game. But not this year, right Nick?

… and further adjusted by Ds played against. I’m thinking OSU and UCF are not punting against Yale or Umass

Hopefully. I would also hope UConn isn't in the perennial bottom 10 list they always seem to be on every year. This alone would be progress.

If Mora can get this team to 3-9 or 4-8 and have only 5-6 be blowout losses while the other losses are competitive games into the middle of the 4th quarter, I will settle for that after the hot garbage of last decade-plus years of football.

Here’s the thing, I have no idea how good we will or will not be. I have hopes, mind you, but really is there much to base a realistic assessment at this point?

For what it is worth we had a good punt team on specials last year. Coverage was good and protection was as well. I hope this coming season we are able to keep up the quality of play on specials.

The only reason we’re not by ourselves in first is because our defense rarely kept the opponents to shorter possessions, leading to more short possessions and punts for us.

I don’t think we will be smelling #2 from this program any more. We’ve got Mora fresh air.

This is the thing. Offensive line? Almost all new. Are they any good? Who knows. Quarterback? Same thing. Defense? Same. The entire approach is changing. This program is heading in a totally new direction. Who knows how long it will take to get there.

Iowa punts were part of their offense.
A team that can’t move the ball on offense, but can bank on a great defense to get the ball back fairly quickly is going to punt a lot. That’s Iowa football for the past several years. They were undefeated well into the season last year or the year before, doing that.
