The Big Ten wrecked this conference.
Somewhat, but the real problem was the far-flung schools in Alaska and Alabama. 7 of the WCHA's 10 schools are staying together -- it's just in a "new" conference. They could've kicked out AK-Anch, AK-Fair, and Ala-Hunts and achieved the same result, but there probably would've been legal ramifications.

Exactly. This is more or less a result of the bigger hockey schools in the midwest reorganizing themselves into Big Ten hockey and the NCHC several years ago. The remaining smaller schools all got lumped into the WCHA, and that was the beginning of the end for the Alaska schools and Alabama-Huntsville, to be with a bunch of smaller schools that eventually came to the decision to cut back on their travel budgets by not being in a conference with them.

The new CCHA is essentially a bus league, like the HE and AH, with the exception of Air Force.

Arizona State may have a chance to join the NCHC now.
