WBIT

Portland 69
Stanford 68 OT

Road teams made a come back, ended up w/ 4 wins today.
My goodness, how the mighty have fallen. Yes, Portland is a good team. But a year ago, could you have ever imagined any Stanford team falling at home in the first round of the WBIT to a mid-major?

It was definitely a year to forget. Will be interesting to see if this was a blip on the radar or the new reality.

Fans are ready for a change at Arizona. Something is up, Adia was tearing up and getting hugs. Could she have been told she had to win to get an extension? Or does she know she is leaving for greener pastures?
I've been critical of her and there has been a down trend, but it would be incredible if she hasn't bought herself more of a grace period there and they are ready to show her the door. Do they really not remember what life was like before she took over?

Isn’t she rumored to be interviewing elsewhere? I forget where?

“It was good while it lasted.” That seems to by the theme of so much in the world these days.

Coach that complained about getting sent to storrs last year. Seems like she is never happy.

Barnes' comments after losing in the first round of WBIT:

This is so unacceptable!

Honesty?

It's pretty clear there are differences in motivation levels when it comes to participating in non primary post season tournaments. Or bowl games if you want to look at football. Some teams don't really want to be there and they play like it. It's been that way for as long as I can remember. Would you rather the coach lie about it with some platitudes or cliches? I think Barnes has been a straight shooter who speaks her mind throughout her tenure as a head coach.

Nothing to do with honesty. If they didn't want to play there, why accept the bid? Let someone else play in the tournament

Here’s a novel idea. How about Barnes saying something to the effect of, “I didn’t do my job getting the team ready to play.” That would have been honest.

Okay, I get that. Teams do decline invitations sometimes. I don't know if the players get to vote, or if the coach decides unilaterally, or maybe it's up to the AD.

There's that too.

Throwing players under the bus certainly isn't new and she's far from the first coach to do it.

To me the more troubling part about it is it pretty much discredits their opponent. Northern Arizona beat them twice this year, I think you'd just have to say NAU is the better team.

Some great individual performances. Swann is a keeper.
I wonder? Tearing up after losing to the Big Sky runner up for the second time this season at home may also motivate the tears. I would think prudence would be for the powers that be to hold off on extension or extension talk till after next year, but we do know that financial prudence had never been a concern for the kitty administration (*or any higher ed administration for that matter).

Maybe 2,700 in the house reflects a decline in support for the 1.2 million dollar coach?

A REALLY bad look, am I the only one thinking about the double bird from a few years ago?

ABSOLUTELY!!

And a case can be made that Payne is the better coach!!!!!!!!!

If Adia wants to coach somewhere else, I am not fighting very hard to keep her if I am Arizona.
On point. Neither am I. BUT, she is a legend in the dirty t and the dirty t folk love their legends.

Inconsistent in her shots, I think the failure to clearly address play preparation, turnover, motivation is a missed shot. Further her failure to should some of the responsibility for development - I am thinking of Cunningham is a clear missed shot.

In fact, had she not been a legendary player for the kitties and had a dream 2 years I think there would clearly be less grace for her - I am thinking of the double bird from years past, perhaps a trick shot?

Now clearly she is no Natasha Adair . . . . but . . . .

Look at the last 3 years under Bonvicini and then the 8 years of Butts and compare to Barnes. She should have some grace period because she lifted them up from the ruins.

As a head coach, when you throw your team under the bus for lack of motivation, it really is an indictment of you as a coach.
I don't read it that way. I was there, and the players played hard. I'm not sure she wasn't including herself in the "didn't really want to be there" grouping, although really the only thing that they (consistently) didn't do was rebound. Cunningham, Jones, and Swann played extremely well. Williams was in a boot and didn't play.

In every "off the record" gathering - chalk talks and off-air at her coach's shows - Adia has always taken responsibility for mistakes she has made and what all the critical folks on message boards would say her weaknesses. That's why she is generally well liked, I can't stand coaches that don't take responsibilities for the good and the bad.

I'm sure that - if there is any idea that Arizona is going to "do something" - it would just be not give her an extension at this point.

Nah regarding the attendance. It wasn't "pushed", it was the best of any game played on the day. Low non-big dance attendance is the norm for post-season 2nd rate tournaments, especially in the early rounds.

The preview in the paper including remarks on NAU by Salvo was very complimentary. We didn't just lose to them in the regular season, we were beat on. At their place, but still.
