The WBCA has released their list of 50 players being considered for the Coaches AA team to be announced in about a week. Paige and Sarah are on the list along with the usual suspects. Apologies to DefenseBB for not posting the entire list. There are 5 general criteria used by the WBCA committee to select the final 10-player 1st team along with honorable mention as follows:
  • Current season game-by-game statistics and achievements
  • Impact on the team
  • Success of the team
  • Sportsmanship and attitude
  • Academic eligibility
In addition, the WBCA chooses a DPOY, FOY, COY and POY (Wade Trophy). The WBCA also provided the names of the 4 finalists for the Wade Trophy as follows:
  • Paige
  • Hidalgo
  • Watkins
  • Booker

It is my understanding that the final WBCA selection occurs after the Regionals, so that the committee can consider the performance of the finalists in those regional games, likely with a view to the criteria “Success of the team.” As info, there are 20/50 finalists scheduled to play in the Sweet 16 games (not including JuJu who obviously will not be playing)

With Juju going down I 99% expect her to get the POY whether she should get it or not. Paige has turned it up a little in the latter part of the season and still has a couple games to show her merit but it will be tough one. And to be clear I am not suggesting that Paige isn't the best player in the country.

I saw a post on Facebook yesterday by one of the UConn associated groups that Paige is also a finalist for the Naismith award...but for the life of me I can't find it now.
She is joined by Hannah Hildago, Lauren Betts, and JuJu Watkins.
I like this list better than the Wade. Booker rather than Betts makes no sense to me.

Aren't these regular season awards?

You could argue that Juju deserves it anyway, but a sympathy vote would taint it a little.

I'd say a legit argument could be made for Paige, Hidalgo, or Watkins. Booker is a great player but I'd have put Betts as a finalist over her.

My WBCA list in no order
Paige
Juju
Hidaldo
Booker
Betts
Morrow
Blakes
Latson
Van Lith
Strong

Traditional, the winners or list is anounced right before the Final Four, last year was April 4.

If Sarah doesn't make the 10 member list....

I'm thinking the NPOY Awards will probably be split. UCONN recognizes, lists in their media guide, the Naismith, the Wade, the Wooden, the AP and the USBWA (Meyers-Drysdale) NPOY awards. Bueckers split them with LayLyssa Smith (Wade) her FR year.

The only NPOY award that Paige did not win during her freshman year was the Wade Trophy that Smith won. By rule, Freshmen are ineligible for the Wade Trophy. So it’s fair to say that Paige won every NPOY award that she was eligible for.

True, but she didn't win every NPOY that UCONN recognizes.......yet. ;)
