I'm loving the preseason build-up and excitement for women's basketball this college season. Like my fellow BYers I'm basking in Hope springs eternal. I CAN'T wait for November 3 when all three teams open play! Arizona State University I'll be in the stands for the opener at home on November 3rd against Coppin State. Last year the Devils traveled back east and lost in overtime. This is an entirely new team and under new coach Molly Miller the enthusiasm in Tempe is infectious. I'm looking for a minimum of 50% increase in attendance, an effective and smothering defense and I'm hoping for the trademark Molly Miller connectedness of her players on the court. This latter issue is of great interest as this will be the first time since her first season at Grand Canyon that Miller's had to formulate an entirely new squad. This is why the Devil hired her and I'm counting down the days till that 6:30 p.m. tip. Grand Canyon Also on November 3rd on the road under new coach Winston Gandy at......South Carolina! I love this opportunity. And I also appreciate Dawn Staley scheduling her former assistant. Classy This is how you take the next step and after a 31 win season under Molly Miller Winston Gandy is not stepping back but he's embracing the challenge. He's brought in an entirely new roster as I believe there were seven seniors on last year's squad. NAU And another November 3rd road game takes The Lumberjacks to The Pit. Under new coach and former lumberjack star Laura Dinkins the roster has been entirely turned over and this is going to be a fabulous insight and gauge of The Lumberjacks under the new regime. Dinkins has huge shoes to fill as Loree Payne demonstrated excellence in all facets of coaching over her 9 years in Flagstaff before heading off to Santa Clara. Last year the Jacks also opened with the Lobos in Albuquerque. Trailing by 10 entering the fourth quarter on the road and trailing by a similar score with 4 minutes left the Jack's rallied for an amazing 2 point win 80 to 78 foreshadowing the tremendous year and character of last season's squad. I also believe the kitties will be playing at some point.
