Football players, hockey players, basketball players went on strike too--for much higher salaries.

SF is also a very expensive city. Good for them.

It's tough to strike when you work for a non-profit. Other symphonies are going under or getting paycuts. If you want to get rich, being a classical musician is not the way. Doesn't matter how hard they had to work to get to their level. And I've seen them, their level is very high.

Probably. Yet San Francisco is a big metro area. One thing the symphony can do is replace every single member with the entirety of the Kansas City symphony. It may just be though that the difference between the two is noticeable to the well-heeled patrons. In that respect, the parallels between sports and symphonies may be there. The only real question is, how much money does the symphony make, what are its expenses, how much leverage do the musicians have?

Wow, that's obscene. I'd like to see what she accomplished to Merritt such a package.

The company I work for imports products into the US through California. There was a port strike just before Christmas when all the retailers were bringing in stock for Christmas sales. The crane operators weren't happy with their contract so they shut down the port. The crane operators who remove containers from the ships make $150K to start, not including overtime. Personally, I think stopping US commerce should be illegal and both sides should agree to binding arbitration. After reading the crazy salaries in California others have posted, maybe $200K a year with no degree to operate a crane isn't out of line out there? I guess I'm in the wrong line of work.

Isn't this the same as, if you dribble a ball for a living? They should get what the market bears, and that's up to every person to determine and then decide if they want to work, or strike, or get into another profession. There are a lot of people who need to be punched in the face before the viola guy.
