Is it just me or are the current round of commercials for subscribing to Direct TV weird? They can be sort of funny, but I don't see any connection between the ads and the product at all.

Speaking of which, for a business that isn't funny at all, why is it that the insurance companies, led by Geico and Aflac , have the best ads or at least all try to be funny. There are those AllState mayhem ads which are, um, different and the Progressive ads with that woman in white who everyone I know finds totally annoying and the It must work because they seem to have dozens of ads with her. Must be the CEO's wife or daughter.

Just my opinion, but the direct TV ads are mildly amusing, but only for the first 100 times you see them. I hate DirectTV -- the company, not the broadcasting - and have found it virtually impossible to get them to remove unwanted programming from my account.

Insurance ads that use scare tactics are distasteful, but I guess people only buy insurance because they are afraid of something happening. My favorite is life insurance -- I'm betting I'm going to die, the insurance company is betting I'm not, and I hope they're right.

Isnsurance companies know that scare tactics are a turn off, so they use humor to offset it. Companies that sell direct, such as Geico, advertise to the point of ad nauseum because they're not paying commissions to outside agents.

nothing sells more than fear except sex of course. fear is the basis of just about all advertising. the fear of being without this product is the biggest motivator of just about every purchase you make.

"State Farm...because you're gonna die and hobos will hump your wife and eat your kids."

That'd sell some life insurance.

My entry for the worst commercials....

The ones where Jamie Lee Curtis runs around handing out yogurt and video cameras to women so they can poop and make videos.

I would actually like that commercial. At least it would be funny and truthful. I also don't have a wife or kids to worry about.

I have on a few occasions sold my hair to wig shops. Ain't nothing funny about being broke.

I like the Charlie Sheen Commercial.

I felt that way during the playoff run last year and The Bonyard was knee deep in Charlie Sheen when he was on his self-imploding 'Torpedo of Truth' tour and rambling on with winning topics like "They took my awesome children away because I marry crack whores".

Moral of the story: "Don't marry crack whores like Charlie Sheen or go to Foxwoods to see Charlie Sheen. Watch UConn win a National Championship on DirecTV".
